Have you every brought your kids clothes here to sell? How did that go? Is it better than a regular consignment shop? I have a lot of nice clothes my kids barely wore and im thinking of how to resell them. I use a shop in my town but im not sure they are honest about what they are doing.

What can I do next?

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE buying stuff from this store. I have tried selling once and it was not a good experience. They ARE very picky about what they will take. They would not take most of what I had to sell that day...despite it being in perfect condition. They are really looking for expensive brand name clothing. In fact, I bout a pair of shorts and a shirt from them and found that they just did not fit him. SO, two weeks later when I went back to try to sell stuff, I tossed that outfit in with my pile. They would not even buy it back.

Depending on what you have, you might be better off taking the tax deduction from giving the clothes to the Salvation Army/Goodwill.

I have sold and bought clothes from OUAC. They are extremely picky about what they buy. One of the reasons for this is because they only have so much space for stuff and they get many people bringing stuff in all the time. The clothing has to be in almost perfect condition and a brand name or they won't buy it. As far as toys or baby gear goes, they check to make sure the products have not been recalled. Therefore, they sell good stuff to buyers.

I have never sold to a consignment shop other than OUAC since there aren't any near me.

it is NOT a consignment shop. They look through your stuff and offer an amount to pay you for some of the stuff. I went about 7 years ago and for a huge pile of stuff they wanted to give me about $5, literally like 50 cents a piece. I didn't take their offer.

I just took a lot to a resale place (Inch by Inch, in Shorewood, IL) and my credit there was $7, they took a whole bunch and it is consignment. In the past year I have made at least a hundred bucks with bringing things there and I have only dropped off 3 times I think. You don't get money till the things have sold and what doesn't sell you come and pick up at the end of the season.

Well Inch by Inch wouldn't take all my stuff. One was a fancy xmas dress with matching American Girl doll dress. It didn't have sizing tags is the reason they wouldn't take it (had cut them off for complaining kid). So, I took my big rubbermade tote to Once Upon a Child. That dress set, 2 tutus and a shirt were all they wanted out of my pile. They offered me $6.15. I took it since the next step for these clothes is good will. I probably could have sold the stuff at a garage sale for a bit more but I didn't want to bother.

And on that trip yesterday to sell I brought my daughter who needs a white shirt and a coat. Found no white shirts she liked, prices were very similar to the consignment store that I sell at. We did find a coat and it was a deal as it was marked 50% off. I really don't know why it would have been cause um, coats are what you need to be wearing soon. Anyway, it's an Abercrombie coat and I got it for $13. If you factor in the money they gave me then I only paid $7. I'm happy with that.

But for being so picky, I was not impressed with what was there honestly.

What I like about it is they pay you RIGHT then & there and the stuff is OUT of my house. What they don't accept goes right to the Goodwill nearby.

Yes, you'd get more listing each item on eBay or Craigslist IF it sells, but if you've got a pile of stuff, it's a great way to liquidate the stuff!

I have taken clothes there a time or two and decided never again. They were beyond picky about what what they accepted and gave almost nothing for what they did accept. What they claim they accept and what they actually do accept are very different. I bought a stroller and riding toy there to use when visiting my mom for a few days at a time a few times a year. A year later we took it there to sell it back, and they refused to accept it for supposed damage. It was exactly as it had been when I bought it at their store. It's a better deal to donate it to charity and take the tax write-off than to sell it to them.

it depends on which location you shop at...the one in chicago is a mess (a total distater) every time i am in there. they are picky about what they buy but that means that they have nice things on the shelves from time to time. they buy all seasons year around and pay cash on the spot which i like better than a consignment.

They are very picky !! My grandson was going from a toddler bed to a "big boy" bed. I was so afraid that he was going to fall out when he took naps at my house or spent the night. I bought a bed rail there. I was given a captains bed for him, so I didn't need the bed rail. I took it back (it had never been used) I was told that it was to dirty to buy. It was $20. Now, it was to dirty ??? I would love to know how they come to these decisions !

If you'd donate, check for a church clothes closet or a teenage parent type program.

I've never used (or heard of until now) Once Upon A Child. There is a consignment shop next to where my mother lives called Mango Street Kids. I save up everything I want to trade away and when I visit her, we take it to the shop and see what she'll take. Whatever she doesn't take is saved for a garage sale or donated to good will.

They only take in season clothes. I found them very picky. It wasnt worth the hassle to clean fold organize and take everything in there. I had tons of stuff that had never been worn or worn once. I only made maybe $20 or so. With the next batch of clothes my daughter outgrew, I just gave them to a friend whos daughter was younger and I know didnt have much money for clothes. You have to be really into going there all the time to.make it worth your while and I just wasnt.

I have never tried to sell to them but a friend of mine has. I believe they only took 4 of her items and gave her $11 total.

Personally I prefer to sell at a local, seasonal consignment sale. It is only held twice per year (spring and fall) and I can set my own prices. I get to keep 60% of my sales less a $10 processing fee.

I think at OUAC you are at the mercy of their inventory. If they are well stocked in the size you are bringing in I think they are going to be ultra choosy in what they will buy from you.

As for name brands...when I shopped there I was not impressed. While they did have some name brand items, the day I was there they also had a lot of 'no-name' items and they were just as expensive as the name brands. I felt that I could do better finding name brands at the local thrift stores.

To shop there I felt their prices were very reasonable for some items which I felt would translate into a low 'consignment' rate. If they are selling a pair of $30+ Justice jeans for $9.50 than they aren't going to pay me very much for them if I were trying to 'consign' them.

Once Upon a Child gives you virtually nothing for your clothes, even great condition name brands. You might want to check out another area consignment shop ( a bit further west, in downtown Plainfield), called Back on the Rack. I've heard great things about that store.
