Now That She Rolls Over, She Won't Stay on Her Back Overnight

We're excited that our daughter can roll over, but it is such a nightmare that she rolls onto her tummy and prefers to sleep that way overnight. Additionally, she likes to rest her arm across her mouth or nose and mouth. She is 19 weeks old.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you, thank you to all who responded. My dr. concurs with your advice! I will sleep easier without feeling like I have to check her repeatedly overnight.

I agree with what everyone has said. My ped also told me that once my boys could roll over on their own it was okay to let them sleep as they wish. However, if you do not feel comfortable you could try putting her in a wedge? They have the ones where there is a wedge on each side so it would keep her from rolling either way.

Once they can roll over on their own, they have the reflex ability to know if they stop breathing or not. She will be fine if you just let her sleep how she wants. Still put her in her crib on her back, and then let her be until the morning. I know it is nerve wracking, but she will be fine. She must prefer sleeping on her tummy and putting her arm over her mouth. You could go in every hour or so and turn her over, but what would be the point. You would get less sleep, and she will continue to roll over again. Also, then you are waking her up and her body will get used to that and she will get up constantly through the night until you break the habit. So, if you feel more comfortable, you can always call your pediatrician's office and discuss it with them. Good luck!

I can understand your concern- my daughter at 6 weeks was rolling over and her ped said as long as she can roll back over, she would be fine. Just make sure there is nothing in her crib that would prevent her from rolling back over if she needed.

my daughter did that around the same time and her doc said it was fine. If she is strong enough to roll over, then she will be strong enough to raise her head if she needs to ie if she was having any problem breathing.

it's normal and I was told to always start baby on her back and if she rolls over on her own then that's ok. if they're able to roll over, then they can roll back. just make sure you take everything out of the crib, no blankets, toys or even the bumper pad.

Hi Jean~
I know it is not encouraged, but I let my little girl stay on her belly. Once she started rolling over on her own, she actually slept better on her belly. My thought was if she was alert enough to roll that way, then she is fine to stay sleeping that way-especially because she is sleeping better. I suggest just making sure there is nothing in her crib that could potentially be a hazard to her, and she should be fine! If you feel better about it, go into her room a couple times for the first few nights & check on her. That's what I did, and after 3 or 4 nights of seeing her ok, I just let he be that way.
Good luck & congrats on the first baby!!

All three of my kids did the same thing. Once they roll over though, they figure out how to turn their faces properly so that they can breathe. If you get up all night to turn her back over, no one will sleep properly. As I did with my kids, my advice is tp just let her sleep and make sure that there are no potential hazards in her crib for her to pull over herself.

Our pediatrician told me that once a baby can roll, it's okay if she sleeps on her tummy. Continue putting her down on her back, but don't worry about what she does after that.
