Non-Soy Dairy Alternatives

We've recently discovered that my almost 4 year old can not have dairy (as per his doctor). I'm looking for alternatives to cheese and yogurt that do not have dairy that are also not made from Soy. We've successfully switched him to lactaid for milk, but are trying to find other dairy alternatives for the rest of his diet (he loves anything cheese, but does not like soy and I do not want to give him soy either).

Most of the recipes we make substitute vanilla rice milk for cow's milk. Almond milk is another great choice. Have you tried goat's milk?www.weelicious.com

My son was allergic to Milk for the first 2 years of his Life. I found out in my research that is you are allergic to milk then you are allergic to goats milk and sheep milk as well. There is nothing wrong with Soy Milk. Do your research online and talk to an allergist. that is the way that I found out a lot of information that helped my son and saved his life. Find your Wholefoods grocery Store and see what they might can help you with as well.

My son loves almond milk. It's far better for boys than soy milk (think estrogen), and works well in recipes that call for milk. We get it at Trader Joe's, and sometimes, even fresh at Ralph's.

Look to see if you can find "goat cheese". You can also buy goat milk. It is actually quite good and good for you. If you have a farmer nearby, a goat farmer, perhaps you can buy from them. My Aunt was allergic to dairy and soy and therefore needed to find something else. Once she started on goat products, she has been very satisfied.

coconut milk and almond milk are good alternatives..i'm not a fan of dairy..i don't drink it ...i don't eat cheese..my son doesn't like it..he rarely drinks milk..he's totally healthy and fine..i think he has some at school..he like coconut milk..there's calcium in broccoli..soy should be consumed in small doses. you can always google alternatives..or go into Wholefoods and ask the nutritionists they're very knowledgeable

Is your son allergic to cow milk? Lactaid is still cow milk and still has the whey and caisen protiens just no lactose. If your son is allergic to milk then he would also be allergic to lactaid. If it's an intollerance to milk then try sheeps milk cheeses or goat milk products. Almond milk is a good alternative as well.

Rice milk is also available that is fortified with calcium and Vitamin D. It works great on cereal and in smoothies and baking. For cheese, you need to be sure that it is "vegan" and not "dairy-free." A lot of soy cheese, rice cheese, almond cheese, etc. has casein (milk protein) in it. If you don't want soy cheese, you can try Galaxy's vegan rice cheese or Daiya cheese (currently only available online). So Delicious makes great-tasting coconut-milk based yogurt. Is it all milks or just cow's milk because if it's just cow's milk then I know a lot of little kids like goat and sheep's cheeses.

Have you confirmed that your son can't have goat's milk? That is an easy sub for cow's milk and won't cause the issues...some of the issues that cow's milk will. http://askdrsears.com/html/3/t032400.asp

Vons now, or Trader Joe's, or Whole Foods, etc all sell lots of alternatives, my only caveat being that soy provides a lot of protein whereas the others won't...so if you are using "milk" as a protein option, soy is a good one. You will find that it is also fortified often with vitamin D and calcium....

Almond, rice, and whole grain milks are available. Less common, but a good source of protein is hemp milk. You could buy it online.

Try flavored soy to get your son started on soy, just look for unsweetened. You don't say why you don't want him on it...if you are referring to the effects of soy on male hormones, that has been largely put to rest. http://www.foodnavigator-usa.com/Science-Nutrition/Review...

I would recommend only organic for all milks though. If you can do soy, then costco sells organic cases of it.
