Does anyone have any thoughts on which is better - ds or ds lite? My son will be 6 in December and we are planning on getting him one or the other for his birthday. Not sure which would be better. Also wondering about the new dsi. Any info/thoughts would be appreciated!

Hi H.,

I agree with Gloria. The DS lite is affordable and can play both game boy and ds games. A newer version of the dsi will be out sooner than later and you can upgrade then.

I would get the DS lite if I were you. He is 6 right now and the DSi may be the latest & greatest, but he is 6. There are two camera lenses in the DSi that are really cool, but I think that you will be happier with the lite. Realistically, he can play both game boy & DS games on the lite. (Game boy games are much less expensive and you can go to Game Stop and get a large selection of age appropriate ones) You probably do not need for him to have internet access at 6 years old.
In a few years, I am sure that there will be another newer, better version of the DSi and you can always upgrade then. Whatever you decide to get, I strongly recommend the Nerf cover that they sell to protect it. It has saved my son's several times from falls.
Good luck with your decision.

Unless you are planning on putting an internet connection on this, I think the DS is fine for a child his age. The DSI is $40 more, and you need internet access ( which is what the I stands for!) , which may cost you a monthly fee.

okay...according to my 15yo....ds is good...ds lite is better because it has a better lit screen and the battery life lasts longer...the dsi is more for an older child because it has internet capabilities...good luck and Happy Birthday little guy!!!

My son is 9 and he has the dsi. It's the latest thing so if you get the older version you will just wish you had gotten the dsi later. It does have internet ability but we have not used it, so your little guy would not know how unless you showed him and gave him the pass word to your wireless network. The cool thing about the internet part is that you can down load free games. Hope this helps.

We are trying to decide for my 6 year old daughter also. From what my husband found the one problem with dsi is the battery life isn't as long as the ds lite. However my arguement is we limit her time on those kind of things anyway and she will be responsible for charging the battery when she is done playing. They always wanted the latest thing so I think we are going dsi and she will grow into all the other features.

I would go DSI...soon he will be wanting one anyhow. There are some cool features also-like a camera. My 5 yo has a DS and is asking for the DSI for Christmas. (his brother's DS is broken so I can justify it by passing the used one on to him-especially since he is not as interested in video games as my younger son!)
