Has anyone heard of the new rental law in Michigan that homes can no longer be rentals? I looked online and just found renters rights and homes for rent!!!
My neighbor was mentioning this to me yesterday as she was cleaning up from another drifter who was being evicted for not paying rent next door.
My step dad is in the process of getting his mother’s house ready to be rented....
If that were true, then the homeless population of Michigan is going to skyrocket.
There must be some miscommunication or misunderstanding.
Sounds like your neighbor misunderstood the new law. I don't live anywhere near your state, however it is almost impossible that a legislature would pass a law saying people can't rent out a house. That would destroy most cities' economies, at least the real estate portion of it. Good luck with explaining it to her :)
I did a little googling (since I'm a landlord in another state and this stuff is always of interest) and found that it looks like some landlords were kind of scamming the section 8 housing payment system. They'd take the money, not pay their taxes, the house would be taken by the city for unpaid taxes, sold at auction for next to nothing, only to be bought by the current owner who gets to start over with a clean slate. Interesting for someone who knows how to work the system.

I think maybe your neighbor heard wrong.
But if she's had trouble with tenants and won't be renting her place out anymore then maybe it's ok if she believes it.
Could be a "local" issue, rather than a state law.
Homeowners Associations seem to be banning or limiting rentals:

East Lansing apparently requires a homeowner to license a rental property. In order to do that, of course, there are inspections (And fees! Don't forget the fees!):
