Dear moms,
Okay moms I need some advise..... I will be receiving some money within the year and would like to open a resale shop (children's clothing). If you have done this before or know anyone who has, please advise me on anything and everything you know about this type of business. I want to open a small to mid-size store. What do you think? Good idea? Bad idea? Too hard? I know it will be hard at first but, I also know I'm ready to put 110% into it. So if you have any info that you can give me it will help me out a lot!!
Many Thanks in advance,
E.

Hello, i actually sell on ebay and love it. I am hooked on it. It's amazing what people will pay for stuff that is used. I sell my son's stuff and just junk around the house and i make about ###-###-#### a month. Depends on what items i am selling. But if you have stuff others want then they will bid and buy it no matter the price. I sold a unique winnie the pooh rug that i had bought over 2 years ago for 12.99 and sold it for 56.00. I started the auction for 9.99. Anyways if you have any question about ebaying i would love to help. ____@____.com

Go to score.org. They will help you with the busines plans ect. They also will direct you to grants for women run businesses.

Remember to count every cost. Most businesses that fail within the first year, were nickeled and dimed to death.

I have to say from the consumer end they do not seem cost effective. Three separate friends have taken me to their favorites over the years (in Houston). I noticed across the board that on items you would really expect to get a good deal on - like strollers, playpens, large toys, etc - were not such a good deal at all. The savings of say 3 to 5% even 10 to 15% was not enough on an item that takes so much wear and tear (even a pricey brand). To me the savings needed to be 50% plus or it is just not worth it. I knew what price the items were selling for new and frankly was just not impressed with resale prices. I found similar with the clothing. I can buy name brand clearance for the same price and not be getting something already worn and outdated. I have several other friends who feel the same way. So- There are those of out there who may not even stop in. I don't really understand the allure honestly. I look forward to seeing what you decide to do. Best wishes.

It's not a bad idea, however be sure your area you plan on opening will support a resale shop or another one. I opened one in a really really small town (300 people) but had a lot of surrounding towns that come to my area because we were the county seat. I was able to maintain my bills but after 10 months I hung it up. I was never able to pay myself. I had plenty of clothes for the resale shop and even had a layaway which helped but beware--make strict rules and plenty of money down -- if they don't pick up the layaway you may lose out on a sale to someone else. One thing that I didn't think about when opening was people did not want to be seen in someone else's clothes. I was just in too small an area. Good luck and be picky with what you take. I would only take on assignments until I could afford otherwise. It's not a hard business just requires a lot of organization. Again Good Luck!!!

I really enjoyed shopping at Once Upon A Child when I lived in Grapevine. I liked the concept too of bringing my clothes in and getting paid right then. I live near Galveston now and there is nothing like that down here.

The ones we have down here make you pay a fee to set up for consignment and then you just get a check when you sale something. Some won't mail your check unless you have at least $20. I just think the way Once Upon A Child did it was so much easier in the end, but I suppose it would be costly at first.

I think there is always use for kids resale. Little one's grow faster than they outwear clothes.

Good luck!

If you set it up in a similar fashion to the Once Upon a Child idea I do not see how you can go wrong. I have lived for that store for 5 years. They have great prices and fantastic sales.

I can never sell anything back so I am not sure how that works. My princess is more of a line backer when it comes to her clothes.

I am an only parent, mother, of a 6 year old little girl. I try to keep her pretty fashionable, but I could not do it with out resale shops. I can not afford off the rack clothing. I save that money for the shoes she grows out of each month.

You are very far, but we love to visit the Fort Worth area at least once a month. If you get it open please email me the information and we will stop by. I wish you the best of luck and I am very supportive.

My mother buys my daughter new clothes, I buy resale.

I think there is a need in the LakeWorth/Saginaw area. Whenever we go, we have to travel to Keller or to the Hulen Area of Ft. Worth... Also - if you added some cute little things that mom friends made and made it like a momtomom shop too... it would be GREAT.
I say, why not. You won't know till you try.
GOOD LUCK!

My sister did this. She bought clothes at yard sales and had a friend who sewed the clothes that needed repairs at give-away rates (10 cents to fix a button, 25 cents for a zipper...) Even then, she enjoyed it but she didn't make much money at it. She ran it from her home, which was on a main street in town. I hate to put a damper on your enthusiasm, but it's a lot of hard work for little return. I think you'd do better selling the clothes on ebay than having a retail shop. That will cut down your overhead and will give you a better chance to be profitable. Get to know the hot brand names - Hanna Andersson, Gap, etc.

Eliyah,

Check out this great home based business I found on Mamasource. It's free, there are no products to sell and no phone calls to make. When you go to the website scroll down and click on Read Text Version. I think it is faster than listening to the video. Please email back and let me know what you think! www.mymagnoliamall.com

There have been a couple that have opened near me and neither have survived. I didn't see anything wrong with them either. The staff were nice, prices were reasonable, stores clean but not extravagant, etc. I don't see many that last that aren't chains. That isn't to say that it can't be done. I would say that you should really do your homework. What is your background? Do you have a business background and have you worked a retail environment before? Will you be able to do your own bookkeeping? Have you scouted locations yet? Can you think of a way to differentiate your business? One thing I have often thought of doing would be to open a coffee shop aimed at moms and young kids. Imagine if Starbucks was kid-friendly? I'd be there every day, and so would most of my friends!!! Perhaps you can make your store a "destination" as well as a retail store? I also tend to see more Women's consignment stores do well rather than kids' resale, so you might want to do both if you have the room. Best of luck to you!!!!

My too cents. Opening a retail shop has a great deal of upfront costs, many of them hidden at first. Regulations and hoops from the city codes, advertising, etc. The only way to truly 'pay yourself' or be able to stop working for yourself (being able to take off for vacations or illness) would be to franchise - again more upfront costs.

Home based businesses have a lower start up cost, and there is reasonably priced training available for those that wish to make money right away. Plus, the multi-level market has no salary cap. Please check out my training source through my website. I don't receive any kickbacks for recommending her, but she could definitely give you direction whether you pursue the resale shop or another line of self-employment. Most of her info is free - to me, I'd rather ask the experts
than a bunch of moms!

Best of luck to you. I know it feels great to be able to have dreams and goals. I pray you are able to make the right decision for you and your family.
