Can someone recommend a good pediatric neurologist in the Orange County area?

My insurance search came up with the following names for Pediatric Neurological Behavior specialty - Lerner, Marc A., MD or Steinberg-Epstein, Robin, MD. Anyone have any experience with either physician?

Also, I would like to hear from parents who are going through this with their child and the pros and cons of having the autism label in your child's permanent record.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who replied. I have made an appointment at For OC Kids with Dr. Lerner. Unfortunately, they are so backed up that it will take 4 months before we can get our appointment. But I feel better knowing that the doctors at For OC Kids have good reputations.

Linda B., thanks for your detailed response. It helped me choose For OC Kids as the place I wanted to use.

Jamie D., I've been meaning to attend one of the TACA meetings in Costa Mesa but haven't had a chance. It would be nice to finally meet other families with autistic children and know that we're not alone.

Run, don't walk, to www.tacanow.org
Great organization for families of autism run by families of autism (unlike Autims Speaks who does not speak for the families). You will find anything and everything that you are needing at this time including referrals from other families on doctors.

Today there is the monthly support group meeting right in your neck of the woods! This is a very proactive group that is working on getting their children better.

I am going to the meeting so if you want to meet /say hi I'll be there at the beginning part for sure. It starts at 1:00 and is at the TACA office on Bristol just a block south of the San Diego Fwy. Dr. Jerry Kartzinel is speaking today on biomedical interventions. Amazing man, father, husband, doctor.

Look up Body Ecology for info and meeting others. I have met alot of parents with kids who have autism in the Weston A Price Foundation. I am a beekeeper and they are finding the bees gut that has been exposed to pesticides and other thing looks like kids intestines who have autism. Work on the food side too. Fermented veges and good organic food all found lots of infor from WAPF. Check it out search and you will get results. Keep it up!

Hi L.,

My son was diagnosed with autism when he was 18 months old (back in February) by Dr. Steinberg-Epstein, she works out of For OC Kids - UCI, in Orange a couple days a week. Dr. Epstein did a thorough examination; the appointment lasted about 90 minutes, where she personally tries to interact with your child and then views your interactions with the child from a mirrored window. She is an expert at recognizing Autistic characteristics and will rate your child based on the DSM IV criteria. If your child has 6 of the 12 characteristics, she will render a diagnosis. My son, met 8 of the 12 but he is very high functioning. Dr. Epstein has 2 autistic sons herself and since she is a clinical doctor she will only recommend ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) therapy. If your child is under the age of 3, you qualify to get free services through the state of California's Regional Center). ABA is usually in the home every day. She won't however recommend any of the alternative treatments like the GFCF diet or digestive enzymes. It will be up to you if you want to pursue those other treatment methods. My son is now 26 months old and has been receiving 12 hours of ABA therapy/week since May and he has made significant progress. At 18 months, he only spoke 5 words and only liked to play alone. Now, I have lost count of how many words he knows, he seems to understand everything we say (receptative language) and he speaks 100's of words now. He can communicate so much better now. He constantly wants attention and interaction with others, and has great pretend play. He has made such great progress that his ABA in home therapy has been reduced to 3 days a week and he goes to group therapy 2-3 times a week to help him generalize all his new found/learned behaviors.

Well, I hope that answers your questions. If you need anything else, please feel free to write back.

Dear L. L.

I work with Autistic children on a weekly basis. The medical profession gives very little hope for this condition like it is a disease. This is not a disease and many children get misdiagnosed. There is a great movie called Temple Grandin ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1278469/) which show the world that this is just a different way the brain thinks and if you understand it you can feel at ease.

Every single person alive has a certain level of Autism. If you are thinking that something brought this on, you are correct. The earlier you work with it the better the results.

Some children are more disposed to having severe degrees of Autism as the movie will show.

The obvious things that we do know about Autism is that you can slowly reduce the symptoms, improve the artistic side and have a pretty normal child after some diligent work. The worst thing you can do is show anger, because to the autistic child, nothing is wrong. The 2nd worst thing is do nothing or wait to long to act on it. In fact Autistic children are very intelligent.

With autism you have to work backwards. Most likely your child was vaccinated. So we already know that there are 7 neurotoxins in the vaccine. So you first have to neutralize the toxins. This takes 30 to 90 days but can be done naturally and safely. Then you work to re-balance the neurotransmitters. This is also very easy to accomplish. I could go further but suggest you got to http://www.anatomystery.com/. Select CONSULTATION. Send them an email about your situation. You will be glad you did.

Good Luck

Kim
