You can google Alabama Homeschooling. I have heard good things about The Way Home based just north of Cullman AL. They have a lot of homeschooling families. I believe they have support groups and lots of field trips. If you need a cover that is not up in your business at all but is simply a covering, Dayspring Academy is good. She has some great articles on her website, especially if you lean toward unschooling. And you can join that group at any time during the year. Some schools have coops or class days, where the families get together and do classes and social activities. We have become involved with Calvary At Home Christian School based in Concord, just north of Hueytown (Birmingham)area. We love it. It's well worth the 1 hour drive twice a month.

Do your research. Figure out what is important to you:
accountability, flexibility, support groups, field trips, social opportunities, structure, or lack thereof. Meet with the other families to see if you click - what sounds great on a website may not necessarily translate into a group you and your kids are at home in. But if you find the right one, as we have, it can truly be a Godsend.
Best wishes in your search!

Hi, I have been homeschooling for 17 years and am almost done.
I am not sure what your "local area" is since many posts are in Texas, Tennessee, Alabama and North Carolina. I am located on the MS Gulf Coast and there are so many groups to choose from here. If you are looking for support in this area, email me back and I will send you links. L.

Are you members of Home School Legal Defense Association? Their website www.hslda.com can probably direct you to your state organization, who can direct you to local support. We have been homeschooling for 19 years and are currently in NW Alabama. If you're close, let us know! God Bless

Depends on what your area is. Here are some websites I found online while researching for my own family:

http://www.homeschoolinginoklahoma.com/ This has a link on the side where you can search for information for another state. It provides information about state laws and also links to various state organizations.

http://www.oklahomahomeschooling.org/ Home Educator's Resource Organization (HERO) of Oklahoma - I think this is the biggest, or most widely-known, of OK homeschooling groups. They provide lists of local support groups and information on legal matters.

http://www.ldfr.com/homeschooling_you_can_do_it/ Latter-day Family Resources, by an LDS family. The information is very reassuring and down-to-earth and she has some neat books for sale as well as good articles to read.

Best of success!

In the state of Alabama you can go to this website and find state and local coverings. It is a great site, because it allows you to search for a site which matches your needs.

C.,
We homeschooled our two daughters in Jonesboro, AR from 1988-1995. Before that, we were in S. California, homeschooling with Creative Christian Education Service. They handled any state requirements. Once we moved to Arkansas, we had to register with our local district in Jonesboro at the Administration Office each year we homeschooled. You can possibly go online and locate homeschool groups/agencies in your area for more information or contact your local board of education or school district office. Pray about it.

My son is not yet school-aged, but I teach in a program for homeschooled students one day a week (in the Birmingham area). You can contact them via their website www.southernartworks.org. You may be interested in the classes, but the directors and/or other teachers may also be able to advise you on local cover schools. Good luck!

The one tip I can give is to put homeschooling support groups in your search site on your computer and you will come up with some good leads. Once you have some information on a support group they can give you the lead you need for a covering. The support group will have lot of other news about the area like class or groups your kids maybe llike to take part in.
