Need Help with Overweight Gifted Child in Burleson

My 9-year-old son has insulin resistance, and he has always been large for his age. He is also highly gifted, so he is doubly cursed (blessed) by looking older than his age and being ultra sensitive to kids' perceptions of him. I would really like to do some type of physical therapy/exercise with him, but gyms don't usually allow kids on the weight and workout floor. He had physical therapy when he was in kindergarten, because his body has always been a lot for his frame to maneuver, and his ankles are weak. I think we need a trainer or some program to add accountability for me (!) and to provide motivation for him. There are a lot of good books out there, but I think we need actual people or a place to guide us. Also, child care is an issue, as I have toddler twins.

Does anyone know of a physical trainer who makes house calls, a gym that has a program for kids, or some special weight loss and exercise program for grade-school age kids? This boy is precious and wonderful, and he has already learned that overweight and "different" kids are objects of scorn on the playground. His other three siblings are rail thin. I am totally willing to exercise with him, and we have been doing swimming and roller skating, but I think we need to build strength as well. His flexibility has increased, but his weight gain is accelerating to unhealthy levels.

I know that kids' bodies are totally different when it comes to training and weight loss, and the insulin resistance only makes it harder. Does anyone know of anything or someone to help me?

What can I do next?

I would like to suggest Wii Fit for your whole family. It has trainers and all the exercises are fun. You should see a demonstration of it and see if it is something that would work for your son. It really is for the whole family. Yoga, snowboarding, etc. I think it would challenge him. If he plays on this daily this summer he should be in shape by August. It's tough when you advance to higher levels. My son is 11 and he spends alot of time on the balance board included with the game.

Does your son like video games? How about Wii Fit? I just discovered it today and am thinking of trying it at home not only for my daughter, but for myself as well.

You should contact Dr. Maria Fisher. See this article. http://www.nbc5i.com/committobefit/6284420/detail.html She was our pediatrician for years. She is very nice and the children love her. She is no longer practicing as a pediatrician but does work with overweight children. She is in Arlington, TX. We never experienced her working with an overweight child though. Both my kiddoes are petite little things. Good luck!

First of all, you need to find a good Pediatric Dietitian to work with you and your son. I recommend starting with Cook Children's Medical Center, or ask your Pediatrician for a referral. Simply getting more activity and excercise in your son's daily routine will help tremendously, but do not underestimate the importance of healthy eating, especially with a complication like "insulin resistance".

If you are interested in child nutrition resources, I highly recommend anything written by Ellyn Satter, RD. She is a leading expert on infant and childhood nutrition and weight. Her website is www.ellynsatter.com. Good Luck!
