Need Counselor Referral

I think I have been suffering from some kind of postpartum depression. I had a very difficult pregnancy (hopitalized 5 times), was put on bed rest for 2 months, my son was born 2 months early and hospitalized for 1 month. Needless to say the last year has not been easy. I thought once I had him things would get better. And they have but I still feel awful and guild ridden. I've always been an active and confident person but that has all changed with staying home from work. I am very moody (fluctuating between overwhelming love for family & soul crushing sadness) and it is really taking a toll on my relationship with my husband and friends. I just do not fee like myself and don't act like my old self anymore. I know I need to talk to someone. I've tried a few counselors in the past for other issues but not really connected with them. Can anyone recommend a good counselor in the Carmel Valley to Rancho Penasquitos area?

What can I do next?

Hi S.,

It looks like you've received some good advice. You might want to try asking your obstetrician for a refferal as well.

Also, keep in mind that this is so common. I went through it three times - never needing meds, but definite ups & downs, not feeling at all myself, etc. Lack of sleep, which goes along with having a baby, is also a big contributer to how we feel. So when, and if at all possible, try and get as much sleep as you can.

This will a resolve before you know it! Keep your chin up!

Well the husband is an awesome find let me say first. :)

Now you dont know how many people talk bad about UCSD but honestly they are the best you can do therapy over the phone! So lets say baby is sick you need help because you are down and your husband is away call them they will have your DR call you back usually with in a few hrs. All of my friends had the best therapy there. Two were bipolar another postpartum. Usually they will give you meds because its from having the baby and your chemicals are out of balance. Zoloft is safe for breast feeding if you do and for postpartum.

http://health.ucsd.edu/specialties/psych/ - this one has some tests to help see if you are truly depressed.

Its best to seek help and I very glad you did. I had some postpartum and I wasn't even depressed. So seeking help is key. Also you wont be cured it takes sometimes a few months to feel better. I know that sucks right? But you will be ok they will give you support. I also wanna add I don't know what INS you have but some have counseling over the phone too. I think this is best for you so you don't have to drive so far to see them.

I hope this helps dear, good luck.

Dr. Pam Laidlaw at ###-###-####. Also, a homeopathic remedy called Ignatia Amara that you can get at Whole Foods, Henry's or Jimbos is really wonderful.

Best of luck to you,

Tarra Stariell, MFT is in Escondido. See her website at www.thecenterforselfdiscovery.com I have been seeing her for the past year for depression and grief counseling. She has helped more than any other counselor I have ever known.

Have you had all your hormone levels checked? Including LH level. A short course of anti-depressant therapy may be needed. I had post partum depression 20 years go and it went untreated. In the end I probably had a yeast overgrowth that was contributing. Diet and personal support is important now. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help. I had no family in the area after my son was born and his father was not understanding. I can offer you Reiki which would help a lot. It can be done from a distance so no need to add more stress by traveling to my healing room. Contact me if you wish, even if only to chat. Warmest regards, C. L.
