My son recently turned 1 and I want to wean him of the breastmilk and start him on soy milk or cow's milk (depending on what he likes). He breastfeeds 3-4 times a day usually before naps and going to sleep at night. I would appreciate any suggestions on what is the best way to do the transition.

What can I do next?

Hi I am a mother of 5 and working full time. My youngest son is 2 months old. With my current job I cannot continue breastfeeding because I have no way doing the breastpump during the day while I'm at work. I breastfed while I was on maternity leave. What I did was I'd alternate formula and breastmilk. And then I only gave breastmilk first thing in the morning & then early evening or before bedtime. I hope this helps.

First, I'd like to know if your son uses a bottle at all. If he does, it makes my suggestion much easier. I weaned my son by slowly replacing one breastfeeding a day with a bottle of expressed breast milk, taking away one a week and ending with the bedtime feeding, which was the one he most depended on. Once he was used to a bottle I began mixing one part expressed milk to one part cows milk and slowly increased the cows milk until I was no longer pumping. It is a long process, but I never had an issue with my son not taking the cows milk. Good luck.

When I weaned my son I replaced breast feedings with milk in a cup. I didn't mix breast milk and cows milk and my son didn't have a problem with cows milk. I suggest replacing the feedings during the day with cows milk first and switching the morning and night time feedings last. Because he would breast feed just before sleep this was the feeding that was the last to go. It is about your physical comfort as well, just don't quit cold turkey so your body can adjust.

Good luck.

I also breast feed my son. All babies are different, but i to replace times I would normally breastfeed with a bottle. My son is 7 months old but brcause of health problems I had to ween him off so I can take my medication.
Also try mixing your breast milk with the milk. But he should be intruduced to the sippy cup now that he is 1. Last resort would be the bottle because of his age.
Good Luck to you.
