Need a Stair Gate in Kaiserslautern Germany

I need to find a baby gate for stairs both top and bottom where one side of the stairs is a metal pole. Does anyone know if such a gate exists? The house we have just moved into has a staircase where one side is the wall and the other side is the railing which is metal railing so a pressure mount gate will not work. Also, a gate that screws into the wall would only work on the one side with the wall and not the side with the metal rail. I am sorry if this is confusing I may be adding to many details so that my request is clear. Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

I have the same situation in my home in the Wiesbaden area. I bought kits from babycenter.com that allowed the swinging gates to be attached. However, the kit that I ordered, was supposed to be "universal" but it wasn't. I still had to make a trip to the local hardware store to tweak what they sent me. It did all work out in the end.

I live in the Naples Italy area and we asked our landlord for help with our baby gates on our stairs. They had to be custom made and our landlord had them made. Down here, we as Americans pay A LOT more for rent than any of the locals so they want to keep us happy. And..they love kids here!!

I have the same issue with our house in Italy. The top of the stairs is wall on one side and the railing on the other, and the bottom has railings on either side. I went to www.onestepahead.com and ordered baby gates from there. If you try to order online it'll tell you they don't ship to APO, however, if you just call, they'll send them to you. The gates we ordered are pressure mounted so it fits on the top without having to drill into the wall, and it sits pretty tightly on the bottom with the two railings. You can also by extensions for them and an attachment for spindle railings. I believe the type we got was "Kidco", but they have a ton on the website.

My favorite web site for babies and kids has everything. Not sure if they ship to APO's but if not, you can always have it shipped to someone stateside and have them ship it. It's www.leapsandbounds.com.

Hi there,

I got my stair gates at Safe Tots in the UK via phone. They were very helpful and spoke...ENGLISH! :) LOL. I had them shipped directly to my house. Its a spendy way to go, but I'm so glad I did it as I'm confident with the gates I got. Here's a website:

Any luck yet? I have two gates that are made especially for this type of stairs. We were forced or "felt forced" to buy them from our x-landlords in frankfurt. We were told that if we didn't pay for the gates then they would take them out and we really needed them w/ a two year old and a newborn. Now our kids are soon to be 9 and the other is 6. We paid 150 euro for the two. If you still need gates make me an offer. I'm here in k-town, queidersbach to be exact.
Bee happy!

We ended up ordering online and found a gate that works really well for that set-up There's a kit for installation on metal railings! The name is Kiddie Guard by Regal Lager. You can probably find a better price, but here's the gate at babies r us:

Look at kidco gates in the states/online. Also, Ikea's gates should work as well.

What we do is us a wooden pressure gate and bungee(s) it to the metal railing and then tighten it to the wall side. Sounds confusing but it worked. We only have one spot that we had to use it but it kept the kids from going on the stairs. I searched a few place in K town for gate but could not find those kind that you are talking about. I know that they are out there though. Good luck!

Hello N.,
Yes, they do exist. YOu have probably already received some answers back on this because this was put out so long ago. I just moved and am just catching up on my e-mail. We lived there and I had these gates and the same kind of stairs. I think we got them at Baby 1. They have a special piece that goes around the bars and the other side is a pressure screw type of thing that goes to the wall. Good luck.

There is a white metal gate that is sold at IKEA. Ir runs about 30 EURO but is WORTH IT! It has pressure mounting at the top and bottom and will open to walk through it. There are 'caps' that screw into the wall on one side and the other side the pressure mounting is tightened by a wrench so you can get a good snug fit. I have 4 of these gates in my house currently at the tops and bottoms of our stairs, one side wall one side thin metal railings, and they work just fine. I did have to buy an 8 euro extention kit because my stairs are wide, I have 2 kids and 2 large dogs ( a shepherd and a rott) and no one has dislodged the gates yet. Good luck

You are welcome to come by and look at them before you order. Also you can make th epressure wounted one yoursolf if you are crafty it wouldn't be tough.

There are kits to adapt for metal railings. Happy Baby in K-town or Toys R Us may be able to help. You probably know that you definitely need to wall mount the gate on the top of the stairs because children can push through the pressure gate and tumble down. The bottom of the stairs would only need a pressure mount. We have done the same thing in our home, but we have two walls. But at would at least save you from having to mount twice if you do the pressure on the bottom.
