I'm seeking a pediatrician in the areas near Oakland/San Francisco and surrounding cities. I will be moving up there in 2 weeks and want to start my search. I would prefer someone who is open to complimentary medicine and won't pressure or lecture me about vaccines. Any recommendations?

What can I do next?

Hi J.,
I would love to talk with you since you sound like a person who might enjoy what I do. I have a free Mommy & Me support group at ST Rose Hospital many Friday mornings. Call ###-###-#### to register. My daughter has a great pediatrician who hasn't hastled her about vaccinations. Dr Mika Hiramatsu at CV Pediatrics. Her practice is full but if you tell her I sent you, she will take you. If you have milk supply issues, I have helped other moms (w/PCOS) improve their supply. S. Boyd, IBCLC www.mybreastfeeding.com

We love Dr, Julia Getzelman at Getzwell Pediatrics - she'll meet with you for an interview (see the website www.getzwell.com). She offers individualized care to her patients, is thoughtful, listens carefully to parents and takes her time in-office -- you will never feel rushed. She's knowledgeable and flexible about vaccinations and will offer you information on pros / cons / scheduling / delaying / etc. and will respect the decision you make.

What I find most important about Dr. Getzelman is that she really trusts a mom's intuition and is never condescending (like some docs are when they say "everything is fine" when you know it isn't or by giving you a look as if to say, "you're being a neurotic mother" - that's so frustrating!) When my daughter was two months old, Dr. Getzelman saved her life by jumping to action when I knew something was really wrong and our first pediatrician would not do a thing.

I am looking for the same type of pediatrician in the same area. I have only found a practice in Mill Valley, Marin. It is called Pediatric Alternatives. They are wonderful but I can no longer go because my insurance does not cover for this practice anymore. Here is their number ###-###-####.
Please let me know what you find out and if you find a doctor in the area since I am looking as well.

I would recommend either Katya Gerwein or Janet Perlman at Bayside Medical Group - offices in Berkeley and Oakland. They are both really great (as are all of the doctors we've ever seen in that group). Dr. Gerwein was our primary doctor and was fine with us delaying vaccines, doing them one at a time, skipping ones we didn't want, etc. I think she would have been OK with us not doing them at all, too - although her recommendation is to get them. Janet Perlman is frequently recommended on Berkeley Parents Network by people who don't want to do any vaccines and a friend of mine who is a naturopathic doctor takes her son to Dr. Perlman (and I know that she isn't doing any vaccines).
