Need a New Vacuum Pronto, but Can't Spend $500 on a Dyson - Suggestions?

Looking online Good Housekeeping gave the Eureka Boss a good rating, but I can't seem to find it in store. I did find a Lowe's with the Eureka 12 amp bagless. A little heavy is OK - we have cats and while we do have stairs, it's short sections and we can sit the vacuum on the landing. I'm not sure how dusty a bagless would be - does anyone love their bagless? Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, since we need it today, I'm sending DH out to try the Navigator Lift Off. We've never had bagless and maybe we'll hate it but then we just resell it on CraigsList or something. The Eureka Boss is simply not available in stores anywhere. That was the deciding factor.

If it makes you feel any better, I absolutely hate my Dyson and will never waste my money on that brand again.

My sister has 3 cats and a dog and absolutely LOVES her Shark Navigator Lift Away vaccum. In fact, I don't know what I've been waiting for....... I should buy one today and shove my Dyson off a cliff. :)

Bagless are great! They're real easy to clean out. I have a cordless shark. It's awesome. But I don't think it would be all too great with cat hair. Try the shark navigator. Eureka also has great vacuums with pet hair extensions.

I have a shark stick but I have no carpeting. I have heard the vacuum models are just as good.

See what you can find on Amazon because they usually have tons of reviews! I don't mean buy it so much as just look it up for the reviews.

I guess it depends on your experience and if you get a good machine. I have a hoover windtunnel and LOVE it! It is the best vacuum I have ever owned. I will never go back to bags that is for sure. It is dusty when you empty it, but if you are careful it is not that bad.

I have a canister vac from Sears and I L.O.V.E. it! It was great when we had cats- picked up WAY more than our Eureka bagless. As for the bags, yes you can only get them at sears, but I get 6 for $12 and I only need to change bags every month or so- so 2 packs easily last me a year. I like the bags, too because they trap dust so well and I sprinkle a few drops of essential oils on the bag and it makes my whole house smell great! hth

I had a bagless and really hated it. Emptying it out was gross. I love Elextrolux vacuums but they are expensive. I have my mom's now that she's in a nursing home. My old electrolux lasted almost 20 years!

I've had hoovers and I've had a panasonic (who knew?). I liked them both (got the Hoovers at Costco the other at a local vacuum storefront as a model-discontinued sale) but you can generally only get about 2 years out of them. I have stairs and a lot of smooth floor surfaces (hardwood, slate, tile) and I also have carpeting - so i prefer the canister style with different attachments. It's less to push & pull and much easier to do stairs with. I also have cats - so there's always kitty hair to be sucked up! Love them but not their shedding!

Hi, AV:
Go to a vacuum cleaner repair store and see if they
have a rebuilt one to buy.
Used upright electrolux are great bargains.
Good luck.

I like my Kennmore Progressive in the $200 range. its lasted for 5 years now. I got it because it was the highest rated on consumer reports for that price range. I was also avoiding baggless, been there done that- never again. My prediction is that the whole baggless phenomenon will pass away and we will one day laugh at ourselves for thinking that having to empty the vacuum after every use was better than changing out a bag once a month. And Dyson is all about marketing a subpar product in my opnion. I have used one on plush carpet and found it was a joke. I had to pick up cat litter by hand because it just couldn't do the job.

I got my Dyson on Craigslist for $125. It was only 6 months old too! I love that machine so so so so much!

I have a Hoover Widpath and it's awesome. I got it from Amazon, but I think Walmart carries it. Affordable, strong, and it's lasted me for the last five years. It is not bagless, but I've owned both bagless and bagged (before my Hoover, I had a Bissel) and I MUCH prefer bagged. Bagless is dusty, and the canisters get dirty. I have allergies, so I'm not interested in letting back out into the air the stuff I have vacuumed up. Good luck!

ETA: I have two cats and two big shedding dogs, and my Hoover handles all the fur really well. My Bissel did not, and it was a pet version! Stay away from those!

I decided to always buy cheap vacuums because I can buy 2-3 of them for what I spend on an expensive one which breaks down anyway.

I bought a hoover windtunnel which was about $250 and it had nothing but problems, finally gave it way after about 3 years.

I went to big lots and bought a dirt devil bagless for $40. It works great and I figure at that price I can buy 5 of them for what I spent on that horrible hoover. Buying new vacuums is also nice because they're totally clean. We have lots of allergies, so this helps.

The bagless is a little dusty when emptying the cannister, so I take it outside. But it's nice because I can actually wash the cannister so it's really clean.

My latest is a canister style Kenmore vac from Sears. It has bags that are only available at Sears, they cost $9.99 for 2 and they aren't very big. Had I known I'd have to go to the mall every time I needed bags, I would have bought a different vac.

I love my Hoover Windtunnel. I bought the cord rewind one from Coscto for $120. I recommend it to anyone!! They also make a pet version, but I couldnt' afford it at the time. I have 3 cats and 1 dog and I dont' have any problems getting hair off\e with the windtunnel though. I would NEVER go back to bags after all the hepa filters keep dirt in.
