Nasal Spray for Kids

Is there any nasal spray over the counter that can be used on a daily basis for kids. I think my son has allergies but 2 allergists don't think he does and won't see us. I picked up some generic Afrin and thats only supposed to be used for 3 days.

He gets sick so much and i don't know whats causing it. Once a week for the past 4 weeks he either pukes up just phlegm or food and sometimes with the food, it comes up 3x and then hes playing and being silly. It either happens after we've been at the park or after I get done cleaning. I've been making my own cleaning products. Starting tomorrow I am going to make him eat more fruits and vegetables just in case hes not getting enough.

Hes been tested for Acid Reflux and doesn't have it. His esophagus is completely in tact.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I've asked his pediatrician several times and she doesn't seem concerned. I took him to a pediatric allergist and described all the symptoms and she said its not allergies and he doesn't need to be seen. I'm sorry, but as often as he pukes phlegm and food, its getting on my nerves and I know he hates it. I had bad allergies as a kid and went through the shots and i had asthma when I was 2 but only that one time. but got way better after high school so I get my seasonal meds in the spring. My husband has allergies also,so the odds are that he has them.

He is 11, almost 12(2 months)

I would be finding a new doctor! It could be something more serious than just allergies. Sounds more like a sinus infection. Has he been tested to see what, if anything, he's allergic to? I think you're playing with fire if you continue to self medicate without knowing what the real problem is. Good luck!

My youngest has non allergic rhinitis and has a prescription for flonase from his pediatric allergist.
Why don't the allergists think he doesn't have allergies? Has he had testing done? Your ped can order a blood test although a skin test is less painful. I might also consider seeing an ent.

As others have said, you could use a saline nasal spray. It will help clean out some of the allergens. While not a nasal spray, you can try children's Claritin or Zyrtec. You didn't say how old your son is, but is he's over 4 yrs, you could try Musinex. It will help break up the mucus and help the cough.

I would bet he's feeling pretty miserable at times. I would definitely take him to a different doctor. Keep going until you find out what is going on. By the way, what does he pediatrician have to say about it?

My son was throwing up phlegm and food almost everytime he ate or played hard. I took him to our family Dr. He has allergies and asthma. I would try taking your son to a different Dr. My boy feels and sounds so much better. He was 5 when I first took him, he is almost 7 now and is a totally diff boy.

I would get a second opinion. Sure there are otc meds but if he's like my son and truly has allergies (seasonal) the prescriptions are the only thing that helps. Good luck mama!

You might want to consult with a pediatric Ear Nose and Throat doctor. Try and children's hospital to find one. My 2 year old has a small malformation--the opening between her sinuses and throat is unusually small. For her it means a lot of runny noses. I also have sinus problems and have been congested enough for it to make me gag sometimes (definitely no fun).

The medications I use for my toddler are saline nose drops (occasionally), OTC decongestant nose drops (I think Little Noses is the brand. It is the same medication as Neosinefrin not what is in Afrin, which is stronger) and oral decongestant. Tryaminic is what I use--it is over the counter for older kids but the doctor told me to use a smaller dose (half teaspoon every 6 hours) for her since she is only 24 lbs. I would run it past your doctor first though.

Hi - You don't say if you have been to your GP. If you have not I would see him if you have and you aren't getting anywhere I suggest a new GP - also I would take your child to an Ear, Nose and Throat doc... they can help you get the ball rolling too. Good luck

Two of my sons have allergies, and see a specialist. The 12 year old takes nasal spray, but only Nasonex (by perscription) is aprroved for children under the age of 5. Both of them take zyrtec daily, which makes a huge difference. What about his pediatrician or family doctor? I would definately start there because nasal spray ( other than saline) can be serious business. And the saline will clean him out but it won't eliviate what is causing the problem. Until we got my three year old on zyrtec and nasonex he had a constant sinus infection. You can also do a warm saline rinse with the Nedi - med bottle, but trust me, its torture for the children. We did it every night with my three year old for six weeks, and it worked wonders until he had enough allergy medicine on board that his symptons went away. There are also some homeopathic remedies if you see a naturopath ( spelling?) if you don't want you child taking daily medicine. Good luck !

Just a regular saline solution might be helpful. He might have a deviated septum, have him checked for that. My son had that and always had what seemed like allergy symptoms while little. He finally had surgery a couple of years ago on his own... it helped some but he still has trouble, docs have never been able to pin it down.

There is saline spray, and there is also that nasal wash that I've heard helps some people a lot. It looks like a teapot and my husband used it when he had some sinus issues. It was wierd, but he said it helped. You can google nasal irrigation to see how-to videos.
