Nap Times - Broomfield,CO

I have an 8 month old son who can sleep through the night and has for several nights. However, he is not on a real schedule and it is on and off on whether or not he'll sleep through the night. I think I have contributed to this by not giving him much of a chance to soothe himself back to sleep and by not enforcing a nap schedule.

At first I didn't mind waking up so much because I had a very low milk supply and needed to nurse him as often as I could during the night since I work full time. Now, my milk supply is almost gone and I am ready to start getting more sleep.

Because he did not have a good nap "schedule" he will nap and various times throughout the day. I am writing to see if any of you have suggestions on nap times and how long I should let him sleep in order to get better rest throughout the night. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Until at least 1 yr, I found two naps worked best (depends on the child). If you do two. I found 9-10:30 and 1:30 - 3 worked pretty well. Whatever time you choose, I think the routine is just as important - if not more. Maybe feel him, read a book then sing a song, then lie him down.. .whatever your routine is, do it each time before napping. I know we put the quiet music on in my daughter's bedroom, then did the routine. Even this young, it signifies bedtime and resttime and helps them prepare to go down. Good luck

Kristi,
All mine at eight months were taking three, two hour naps. One to two hours after they wake up in the morning is a good time to do the first nap, then about two hours after they wake for the second and then two after they wake for the third. Not all of them will be two hours long, but I allot at least that much time for planing my day. I try to stick to the times I pick every day because their body will regulate and it will start getting tired around the same time, and they fight it less. It will also be easier to notice when they are getting tired too.
Good luck,
E.

Wow, I guess my son got more naps than most. At about 8 months he was having 3 naps a day. What I would do would be to look at his bedtime and wake time and figure out a schedule that fit in those naps. We would do wake and feed, play, then sleep, repeat. I have been told that naps should be at least 1.5 hours to get the rest that they need and no more than 3, or they confuse night with day. I think at 8 months, they also need around 16 hours of sleep a day (but I could be off on that). I think if you get into a routine and put him down to rest, even if he doesn't sleep, he will get the idea and start sleeping. Babies really thrive with routine, and that may be enough to make him a bit more predictable at night.

A book with great ideas is "The No Cry Sleep Solution Book " by E. Pantley. It explores naps and nighttime. Also, please cut yourself a little slack! :) We can't "enforce" a baby to sleep. You're doing a great job balancing motherhood and career. What a job.

For nap times I would put my daughter down about 9-9:30am. She would sleep for about an 1-1.5 hours. Then after kunch I would put her down around 1-2 pm. She would sleep about the same...sometimes 2 hours. Some babies will sleep for two hours for both naps. Now she is almost 2 but she was about 13 months old the nmoring nap was gtting weaned out where she wold go down about 1am and sleep for 2 hours. Now she goes down btw 1:30 and 2 and sleeps for 1-5 to 3 hours (averaging 2.5 hours). If she is not up by 5pm I waker her up. I read that they should be up for 3 hours before bedtime (hers is 8pm). This schedule works well for me. He is also at an age he may have a rough night here and there, we all do with sleep in some from. Babies are no different. Good luck

At eight months my daughter was still taking three naps a day. Every once and a while she would skip her third nap. At 11 months almost twelve she is still on pretty much the same schedule except that now the third nap is only sometimes now.
My daughter gets up between 6:30 and 7:00am.
Nap number one is at 9:00am. She sleeps for 1&1/2 to 2 hours.
Nap number 2 is 12:30 or 1:00. Again she will sleep about 1&1/2 hours.
At eight months nap number three happened around 3:00. and she would sleep for about 1&1/2 hours again.
Now her nap, if she needs it varies a little but usually happens around 4:00 or 5:00 and lasts about an hour.
Bedtime is at 7:00 and she sleeps through the night. Sometimes when she is teething, sick, or is having a growth spurt she will wake up hungry. But she pretty much always sleeps through the night.
I have found that having a schedule really helps. Of course all babies are different but generally they need to take two -three naps a day at this point each for 1&1/2 to 2 hours.
If she seemed to be going through a growth spurt I would let her sleep a little bit longer during her naps. Good luck.

Pay attention to when he is napping during the day. Does it tend to be around certain times of the day? If he tends to fall asleep between certain times, put him down somewhere around that time frame, if his morning naps fall between 9 and 10 put him down around 9:30. As you do this, you will find the time that works the best for both of you.
