My Washing Machine Smells Bad- Anyone Know How I Can Fix This?

Our washing machine has a faint smell of sewer lately and I can't figure out why. Its really light and not very noticable unless you are up real close, but it is gross and I want to fix it ASAP. It seems to be working fine and thankfully the clothes do not have the smell. I am thinking that it may be a bad hose connection to the sewer or wherever the water drains to. Has anyone else ever experienced this? Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix it? Or do I need to call a plumber? I don't even know if a plumber is the right professional I need to call to fix a problem like this. Any viable suggestions are certainly welcome!

Thanks in advance..

vinegar is a common smell killer, found at most stores.
We use Odo-Ban. It is a non toxic (i think)biodegradable cleaning solution you can use on anything, has a fresh scent. You can get it at places like home depot, menards and the Sams Club, it works wonders (also like febreze)

Sometimes mold can start to grow-especially in front loading washers. You can put an enzyme based dishwasher detergent (like Cascade complete) and run it on high. This will disinfect the machine.

white vinegar works real good on clothes (like musty dishcloths believe it or not!!) I put about a cup in with my regular wash...I'd try dumping a bunch in there and running it...it rinses out and brings the smells with it.

I had to remove the agitator and clean underneath it. Mine had a screw off top and it lifts off easily. You will be surprized and probably really grossed out by what you will find under there. It is so worth the effort. Good luck

Mine had a funk too - I sprayed Oust in it one night, left the lid shut and it smelled fine the next day. I haven't noticed additional odor in a couple of weeks.

We have the front loader that stinks too. I gather all of the "whites" that need to be bleached and run a load. I make sure that I put it on soak and let it sit for a bit. I also make sure I leave it open to stay dry. (I unscrewed the light bulb so that it does not stay on)
Good luck!

I have had this on occasion and found running a cycle with a cup of bleach takes care of it. I also leave my washer open for a few hours after washing clothes. I think some water accumulates under the washer tub and starts to smell. I have actually had serviceman out in the past who clean out the outer tub and that solves the problem also.

Mine also does that smelly thing. I just put some bleech in it, I just think the pipes need a good cleaning. I am checking into it myself to find somthing to put in drain to help. If you find out let me know as will I.

Tea tree oil works great, just run an empty load with a few drops of tea tree oil and it should clear it right up.

We had a similar issue. It was two fold. With a front loading washer, mold can accummulate. We found just leaving the door open helped a lot. Also, there is a drain under our washer, and the trap can go "dry" after some time and it starts to smell a little of sewer. We just pour some water (a quart or so) in and it really helps. Good luck.

Before you call anyone, run a cycle with bleach in the washer--no clothes. This will usually get most smells out of the washer. You can also try baking soda, but the bleach will usually do the trick.
