My IUD Is MIA!

Has anyone ever heard of this happening? I went to have my IUD removed, and my Dr. was unable to locate it, even with an ultrasound and alot of very painful probing. He says it has either fallen out without me noticing or has embedded itself in my uterus, which could affect my ability to have more children. I'm facing possible surgery, and I'm freaking out! Have any of you faced this problem, and if so, what was the outcome?

So What Happened?

Hi Everyone, and thank you for all of the info and well wishes! I had the procedure yesterday, and they were able to find the IUD - intact - high up in the uterus. They removed it with no problems and I'm doing fine!

Hi J. ~ My sister had to go through surgery to remove her IUD many, many years ago. She never had another one put in, but found an alternate method of birth control. She did have some problems conceiving years later, but I think this was due to some hormonal issues. She now has two beautiful children. Best to find out NOW what's up before any infection or complications arise. I personally would never use an IUD because of this. I wish you the best. ~ K.

This unfortunately is a real risk that you can read about in medical literature. I am sorry that your doctor did not go over the risks more thoroughly with you before inserting it.

Hi J.,

Yes, your IUD could have fallen out. How big was it?

They would do a D & C. Ask the Doctor you want to know what does he mean when he says surgery?

Hope this helps. D.

I has a Mirina inserted at 6 weeks post-partum and when I went back for a follow up two weeks later, mine was also MIA. The probing and ultrasound didn't locate it, but then I was sent for an xray and that showed it free-floating outside my uterus. Since at 6-weeks pp your uterus is still contracting back to its original size, I guess this happens sometimes. (kind of a surprise to me, but maybe I should read fine print better!) Anyway, I had the surgery to remove it, which was really not bad at all compared to my c-sections. While I haven't gotten pregnant again -by choice, I don't think there were any problems caused to my uterus. I also had them insert a new one while I was under (this is how much I hated the pill) and it has been obsessively checked and re-checked since and I've been otherwise quite happy with it. Sorry this happened to you too. Good luck. Let us know what happens.

I have the IUD and I have been having problems with my boyfriend feeling it and hurting him during sex, so my doctor intentionally cut the strings shorter to see if that was more comfortable for him. When she cut the string she advised me that it could cause the IUD to basically get sucked up into my uterus and I may have to get surgery to remove it, so yes I have heard of this however, my doctor acted (in my opinion) like this was not a common thing but after reading your post and the others who responded, now I am scared. I may go ahead and find an alternative but I really do not want to do that because this is easy and I don't have to worry about it on a day to day basis (I would be pregnant again on the pill, can't remember to take it). I don't have much advice but I hope everything goes okay. It's nice to be informed about how common this actually is though, so in a way you kind of helped me out...thanks.

I have not had a problem with this but have a friend whoose migrated over above her hip she is having it surgically removed this week.

I think I would want an xray done on my lower body to see if it has moved like my friends did.

good luck

I had a friend that had the same thing happen to her. She had to have a ultrasound and they finally found it floating in her abdomen. So she had to have surgery to remove it.

J., first off, I hope this is taken care of for you quickly, and you regain your pwn body and peace of mind!

Secondly, I am shocked to hear so many horror stories about the new IUD's!!!! I was so happy to have the Mirena put in but MUCH HAPPIER when it was taken out -- i thought it was just me! Apparently not ~

As for birth control, my husband and I were using the contraceptive gel VCF for years before we really started trying, between our kids (now three and 10 months) and went back to it when I had the hateful Mirena removed. To date (knock on wood) have not had one bad thing to say about it!

Hi J.,

I am so sorry to hear that you are having such issues with the Mirena. I had it put in about a year and a half ago and it was the best thing I ever did. I have had zero problems and just went in for my check up last month and she saw it sitting exactly where it was supposed to be. I have not had any discomfort at all. Although a friend of mine had it put in and after a week she still had severe bleeding and cramping and chose to have it removed. I think it really just depends on your body. Obviously everyone is totally different, yet they have developed a universal product that is supposed to be right for everyone, but that is obviously not the case. Good luck and I hope they find it and get it out so you can get back to normal!

J.
