Hello. I am getting the Mirena IUD next week. I know all the medical info but would like to know how you all like it, your experiences with it, etc. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I have the Paraguard (copper IUD without any hormones in it) because I have a blood clotting condition and can't be on any other form of birth control.

I have had it since last September. The procedure to have it inserted wasn't bad, a little uncomfortable but I have had 2 kids naturally. My periods are normal (panphlet (sp) says I might get heavier flows), my sister in law had the same one and had horrible periods and ended up having it removed.

I love the fact that I do not have to worry about taking a pill or putting on a patch and that it can last for another 9 years if I wanted to keep it that long! Although, I am using it for short term birth control since we want more kids.

I have a friend on Mirena and she has had no problems with it (that I know of)

Good luck!

i've heard alot of people that have had it love it. i got it after i had my son and it perferated through my wall and was lying somewhere, i ended up going in and getting it surgically removed about a week later. one of my friends had the same thing happen when she got it recently. i myself would never suggest it cause if it does happen even though the chances are low you do have to have a surgery to remove it. i would suggest the one you get in your arm that is long term or something else.

I had an IUD prior to getting pregnant with my current child, and I also did a lot of research before I chose. I didn't choose mirena primarily because I had some issues with the hormones, so I opted for the hormone-free copper alternative, which worked out wonderful! I had slightly shorter periods, and my husband and I happily stayed pregnant free until we chose! I would highly recommend either, depending on your experience with other hormone birth control pills or devices. Good luck!

Everything was fine at my appt in Oct but by may I was about 8 weeks pregnant. I am sitting next to my 2 1/2 year old right now!! I am not complaining at all. He is our 4th boy and life is good!!

Hi. I had a the Mirena IUD put in last summer and really enjoy the freedom of it. I had spotting for about six months on and off, but now have very little if at all. In fact, now my periods are really just spotting. I also found that emotionally I became more even keeled, I guess it has just enough horomones in (at least for me) to balance me out. Previously, I was not on any birth control, so I did not have any horomones in my body from the pill, patch, etc. My first few periods were really heavy and came at times almost every two weeks, but once my lining thinned, as I said, just spotting now.

If you can make it through the first six months, it is worth it. Now, if you are already on birth control, which I'm guessing you aren't with an 11 week old, then it may not take as long for your lining to shed. Everyone's body is different, but this is how it went for me.

Good luck!

Hi M.,

I have the Mirena for over a year now and I love it. I love not having to worry about taking a pill every day. I also have not had a period since October '07. Once in a while I spot for a day or 2 but it's only to where I need to wear a pantyliner. I would recommend the Mirena to anyone.

I had Mirena after my daughter was born, almost 3 years ago. I had my daughter via c-section. I got the IUD about 7 weeks after. They had to shock my uterus to get the IUD in, they said b/c I had never had a contraction that is what they needed to do to get it to be in the right way. After it was in, I was bleeding for 4 months straight, some days heavy, some days light, but I was always bleeding. There were days where I would sit on the toilet and cry just watching the blood flow out of me! It was that bad! I had very bad headaches, and I was exhausted for those 4 months. I had some very bad crams during month 3, called my OB he said that it's normal, just to bear with it and it will get better in month 4. Then once month 4 rolled around I the cramps got worse, and I was very sick to my stomach all the time. During month 4 I got the worst crams I've ever felt, shocking pains up my stomach and spine, I was on the floor and work all balled up, nothing was helping. I called my OB again, once the cramps let up after 25 minutes, and he made an appointment immediately for me to come in and get it taken out. I asked a lot of questions when I was in getting it taken out. Obviously I paid for the ultrasound before it was put in, then for the acutal IUD. I paid over $160 for it and had to have it taken out after 4 months. Obviously b/c of the issues I was having, I wasn't intimate with my husband during those 4 months anyways. Not like I needed the birth control. lol. Anyways, my OB told me that everyone is different with it, that most often than not, if you don't have contractions during your labor, (and I didnt b/c of ememergency csection due to excessive swellling and protien in my urine) than it would react differently to me.

Never again will I try something like that. I will take something I put in my mouth every day, so I can stop taking if need be and not have to go through so much pain! After I started having problems with it, it was like people came out of the woodwork about it and started telling me horror stories. If I were you, I'd look it up online, I decided to after I got it taken out and saw many different women's complaints and actually a law suit on the company also. Do your research & think about what's right for you. :) Good Luck!

Hi M., I have had mine since October 2005 and love it. I spotted on and off for maybe the first 6 months. (When I wanted to get it my doctor told me many people are put off because of this for the first few months but if you weather the storm you will eventually love it). I now only get one period a year if I can even call it a period. It's the best thing I ever did.

I had the Mirena IUD inserted less than 6 months ago and I LOVE it! At first, every 28 or so days, I'd have a period - but it's tapered off each month and now I don't have any spotting. Plus, I don't have to worry about remembering to take any pills, etc. I have had no side effects (no food cravings, mood swings, etc.). I LOVE it.

Hi M.~

I have had this in twice now and I LOVE IT!!! My first one was in for a year until we decided to have another child and the second was put in at my 6 wk check up following the birth of our son. What I absolutely love about it is that you don't have any side effects like the pill b/c all the birth control stays in your uterus and out of your blood stream. Insertion was not bad at all, but Motrin would be a good idea and I am sure your Gyn. will prescribe you some for after. Really not a big deal-some cramping following the procedure, but a lot like menstrual cramps.

Enjoy!! It is wonderful!!

Hi M.,

LOVE IT! I have had it for 5 years and I will be getting a new one in the next month. I did bleed for the first few months, as the lining of the uterus thins out, it bleeds, but it doesn't cause cramping. After that was done I haven't had a real period since. I have had the same package of pantyliners for the past 4 years. There is no 'hormonal' feeling like I had with the pill, and it is great. I did have to have the cord cut once or twice at the begining. Also, I had cramping for about 2 days when it was put in, so I plan to take it easy when I have it changed. It is the best thing to control periods. When I have my yearly exam they can't easily find it, so I usually have an ultrasound to locate it and it is fine. Honestly, I plan on sticking with it until I hit menopause ( I'm 48), no more periods for me!
