My daughter had 2 UTI's one right after the other recently and the doctors sent us to the hospital for a VCUG and an ultrasound on her kidney. She has or had reflux. Does anyone else know what this means that can explain it in normal terms?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I want to thank everyone who wrote to try and help me, and I wish that I had some good news. My daughters results were not that great. She has a swollen kidney which means that she may have a blockage in there, so we have to go through yet another round of testing. As for right now, she is doing great and we havent had anymore UTI's. The cranberry juice was one of the first things that I tried, however she will NOT even come close to a cup of it. So the yogurt worked. Thank you for all who suggested it!

My daughter had reflux as well and the Dr's put her on profolactic (sp?) antibiotics for 6 months until she outgrew it. She had a level 2 on the left and a level 3 (if I remember correctly) on the right. She is 11 now and has never had another uti since. Good luck.

Hi K.. Your situation sounds frustrating. I hope you find a solution soon. My experience with health and nutrition suggests the cause of your daughter's reflux and UTIs is in her diet. Acid forming and acidic foods are the culprit to many digstive disorders and cause problems in the urinary tract system as well as the bowels. Try eliminating all dairy, citrus fruit, white flour, white sugar, wheat gluten and artificual food colorings from her diet for at least 2 weeks. Often just removing these items from ones diet will put a stop to many discomforts including gas, allergies, head aches, skin rashes, fussiness, reflux, UTIs and aches and pains in the bones. Best of luck finding a solution! I hope this helps.

I do not know if this can be given to a child that young, so you would really look it up, but maybe look into giving her digestive enzymes? just search it in ask.com and they will probably come up with products and tell you the ages that are appropriate for reflux. cranberry juice does wonders.

My little son had multiple VCUGs before the age of 3 and had to experience many painful catheterizations. He had reflux but the Dr. said to wait and see, and he did grow out of it by the time he was 3. Surgery is necessary in some cases though, you need to go to get at least 3 different doctor's opinions. Good luck.

My daughter is three and has the same problem. Her doc told me there are different types of bacteria that cause them. As of now she hasn't had any more tests but is seeing a urologist next week. I have heard sometimes liquid soap can be a culprit. The other problem I have is my daughter is still potty training and will hold her pee. I don't know if this is helpful but at least you know you are not the only one going through it.

Hi, I remember when my daughter had the same thing I think she was younger. We went through the same thing. Ultra sound but also they did a test to see if she had reflux. I think they used dye to see. Anyway she was fine and did not get another one untill she was 10. It is so funny because i actually forgot about this until I read what you wrote. She is fine now and but then i was a wreck worry if something was wrong with her. Just follow up with your doctor and If you havent had the test to check for the reflux do that and hopefully it wont happen again. Just stay on top of it. That is the best advice.

I would see Dr. Pram in Ridgefield. She is an amazing naturalpath doctor. The mainstream doctors do not always have the answers. I bring my son to her whenever there is a problem and she always has an answer and keeps my son off of harmful medication.

You want to keep the UTI's away. Make sure she drinks a glass of cranberry juice a day. Or eats cran-raisens. There is something in the cranberries that doesn't allow the bacteria to attach to the wall of the bladder causing an infection. Trust me...it works every time.

some kids are just prone to uti's have her rinse extra well in the shower just to rule out what the doctor says. then take that information to the doctor. i have refused to leave the doctor's office until the problem was figured out. you need to be firm they may have a degree but nobody knows you're child better than you do. My youngest son has too many health problems to list however they were taking their time figuring out the problems. i almost lost him due to them lolly gagging around. i no longer mess around with the doctors if there is something they say that i don't agree with i ask them to explain it until it makes sense to me. then if it still does not make sense get a second opinion. uti's can also be cause by bed wetting or if she still pees herself from time to time and doesn't mention it. hope this helps.

Hi K.,
I have three girls, so I know what you're going through. I know that cranberry juice is one of the best things you can give them, but sometimes they just don't like it. One thing that has worked really well for us is a cranberry juice powder in a capsule. I am a distributor for a company called Juice Plus, and they make a fruit and vegetable capsule, as well as a berry capsule called Vineyar Blend, but I am not going to send you to my website because that would be inappropriate and look like I'm just trying to sell you something. If you just go to the generic website, which is www.JuicePlus.com, you can get it, and it wouldn't be through me. We've used Juice Plus with our family (including all our children) for almost five years now, and it's made a huge difference in everyone's health in a general way. Plus, if any of the girls start to get a UTI, I just take the Vineyard Blend capsule and open it into a small amount of liquid (like water, apple or orange juice, or anything like that) in a medicine cup (like the ones you get with children's Motrin) and then I give it to them to drink quickly. It's a great way to get all those helpful berries into them without the taste of cranberry juice, AND without any sugar, which is really important! If you want to know more about Juice Plus, you can contact me at www.justeathealthy.com, or if you want to go to the generic site that has nothing to do with me at www.juiceplus.com, that's fine, too. I just want to help. Good luck, and I hope this resolves soon.

My son had a uti at 4 weeks and had to have the VCUG (results inconclusive). From my understanding it's an xray where they use dye to make sure sure that urine is flowing properly (outward) and that there is no back up which would cause another infection.

To the best of my knowlefge reflux has to do with things backing up...(i.e stomach gases backing up into the esophgial causing acid reflux/heartburn)

Make sure you never wipe her back to front or use the same wipe on the vagianl area after it has touched her rectum. Bacteria is easily spread that way.
