My daughter is 4yo. Every day I have a CONSTANT struggle trying to get her to drink liquids other than her milk. She is tiny and we have added PediaSure to her milk for the added nutrition and she LOVES it! I do make other things like jello, pudding, etc. but I dont think it is enough. We dont have another routine MD appt...thought I would ask other moms if they have had this happen and WHAT to do! I have never known a kid to NOT "die for" Kool-Aid, Juicy Juice, etc. She will occasionally sip some Pepsi. When I say SIP I mean SIP! Please help!

What can I do next?

Be Happy!! If all your daughter drinks is her milk and water you are one very lucky lady and your child will be healthier for it in the long run. So many Mom's here complain and worry about their child not drinking milk...my middle one won't touch milk unless it's chocolate and she's 14! Honestly though, it's more than likely a stage she is going through and her body wants the milk so don't fret...it could be so much worse! Remember this in 10 years when all she is drinking is pepsi.

I have a 5 yo daughter, she usually just drinks choc milk. Sometimes she will drink some water, occasional juice, but mostly choc milk. I did notice she will eat popsicles like they are going out of style, lol. I have even given her pedialyte popsicles for the added hydration. She is fine in every way, and it's prob just a phase.

Good Luck,

L.

Is she also eating? I mean, if she will drink milk and nothing else, as long as she is eating well, that's a good thing. No kid needs to drink Kool-Aid or pop.

She doesn't need to drink juice or pop. My ped told me he'd be happy if the kids never had juice. That's not usually realistic because juice is offered to kids so much but I don't think you need to worry. Just consider what she is eating-- is she eating a variety of healthy foods? She might be small just because that's her growth pattern. If you are concerned because she is losing weight or not gaining, check with your doctor. But if the main problem is she doesn't like juice, I wouldn't worry.

HI C.,
My son is --and always has been--a lover of his "moo" as he calls it...especially at that age (He's now 5). He has never liked plain milk, so we've always mixed a third vanilla or strawberry. Even now, I add a splash of the French Vanilla coffee creamer to it. He would drink milk (made like that) all day if I kept giving it to him. What I started doing is to try to give it with something at breakfast & as a snack before bed but through the day, try to give her water as much as you can. A lot of juice really isn't that great either. Maybe allow her to help you make the Kool Aid. That might get her interested. I know your dilemma becasue the milk really fills them up and their food intake goes down. Try to do it gradually and give her the milk only at certain times. With summer coming I'm sure you'll find lots of situations where she is outside, hot and dying for something to drink! Good luck.

Don't think of it as a bad thing. It might just be the way the body is telling her that she needs the milk. A lot of the time when people crave certain things it's the body that is telling it that it needs that certain nutrient. At that age children need calicum for their bones and teeth. So think of it as a blessing rather than worrying about it. It could be worse. If your child is on the small side it could be because of a fast metabolism and children are very active at that age. If you do have concerns talk to her doctor about it. It never hurts and it will be reasurring to you.
