My 16 Month old is using a lot of diapers no less than 10 a day if not more. She weighs 24 1bs and i am changing her every hour to hour and a half. the diapers are soaked. she drinks what most one year olds drinks she gets her breakfast in the morning around 7:30am and a half cup of milk and then she eats at about 11 with a whole cup of milk or gerber juice 6oz. and she drinks maybe two more cups of something during the rest of the day. It seems like she shoud be using less diaper but she literaly goes through a case of 108 diaoers size 5 in 8-12 days. Is there a problem. She seems to be using more and more diapers Ive tried every huggies, pampers loves and the walmart and kroger brands all with the same results.

What can I do next?

At that age my boys were probably only going through 4 or 5 diapers a day, changed after each meal and at bed time. What size diaper is she wearing? I found that when they peed through the diaper it was time to move to the next size and that fixed the problem.

Okay, the all caps need to go in the future. As well more information is useful, such as how much does she eat/drink in a day, what size are the diapers, how much does she way, height etc. Have you discussed this at any of the pediatric well visits? What brand are you using and how often are you changing? Are rashes persistant etc. So, you can either call the doc on monday and discuss it with them (best option) or unlock the caps, give more information and wait for the answer that makes the most sense to you.

BTW 10 is a typical number of used diapers - but soaked may be an issue. On average with a little one they go thru a diaper every 1-2hrs (in my experience).

Not being a docotor, with the information given I see no issues - however if you are not comfortable with that opinion - call your doctor. I suggest you keep a journal 3-5 days worth documenting food/drink/diapers how much how often etc. This kind of detailed info is good for visits/conversations like this.

at that age.. my kids were changed morning, before nap, after nap and at bedtime.. and whenever tghey pooped.. so 5 diapers a day.

we always used pampers.. we never leaked.. I would try leaving a diaper on for 2 hours.. i bet they wont leak.. if that works try 2 1/2 hours.. you should be up to 3 or so hours between changes.. really there is no reason to change diapers every hour.. the new disposables are super absorbant.

the diapers last all night and dont leak.. so they arent going to leak in 1 hour during the day.

Are you sure she's in a big enough diaper for her size/weight? Have you tried diaper doublers? I probably changed my kids every 2-3 waking hours when I was with them at that age. If she's soaking a diaper every hour, I'd mention it to the doctor.

If you have her in the right size diapers for her body weight (too small or too big will not absorb properly), tuck the top down, front and back, before fastening, fan out the leg gathers around her thighs to facilitate good absorption, and she's still soaked I'd get her in to see her pediatrician. You want to rule out medical conditions. Diabetes comes to mind because of an acquaintance whose 14 month old needed to be changed every 2 hours for the same reason. Her blood sugar was 600 when it was checked in the office, no history of diabetes in either side of her family.

It's worth mentioning to her doctor.
You want to rule out a bladder infection or diabetes but sometimes frequent peeing in large quantities is just a developmental thing.
Of course changing her when she's wet/soiled is important.
Sitting in a wet diaper is bad for her skin and can get yeast infections started.
The diapers absorb quite a bit but if she's overflowing them, then there's no way you are changing her too often.

You don't have to change them very often. At this age most of the time in child care we only change them off schedule when they are poopy. If they are not flooding then let them stay in the diaper longer.

If she was going to the bathroom, which she is in no way old enough to do, she'd be going every couple of hours. So she's doing find with the number of times she goes, you're probably just changing her too often.

If she is truly soaking diapers every hour, that sounds excessive. I would ask the pediatrician. Not sure about the fluid intake - is it possibly more than you're recalling? And does she seem thirsty often? Excessive thirst and excessive urination are possible symptoms of diabetes so you could ask the doctor about that. If there is no diabetes in your family don't let that make you think she couldn't have it -- there does not have to be any family history for a child to be diabetic. It's worth checking and just ruling it out.
