Our daughter would like to go to the movies with six of her friends for her birthday. She would like to see Alvin and the Chipmunks but it seems that everyone has watched this. I was wondering if anyone has seen Avatar and if it is appropriate for 11 year old girls. If so, is this a movie that 11 year old girls would like? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the information! I forgot to mention that I will be listing the movie we plan on seeing in the invitation so parents know what we will be going to see. Harkins Theatre has a birthday package, it is $9.50 per child and that includes the movie, popcorn, drink and a special present for the birthday child. I never thought of going for pizza or something afterwards so that might be an option also. I think she has narrowed it down to Alvin or going to see New Moon again. I was mainly looking for information on Avatar if she chose that movie. Thanks for the advice!!!

I can tell you this, in my opinion it is completely approriate for young girls. We went to see it as a family and my children are 12 girl, 10 girl, and 9 boy. It was a great movie and my middle one didnt even really want to see it and now she says it is her favorite movie ever!

Have fun and hope she has a great birthday!

Whenever I'm not sure about a movie to take my son to, I always to go www.commonsensemedia.org. There is tons on information and reviews from parents and others on there. A birthday party at the movies sounds like a lot of fun! Good luck.

I'm not sure I would take the responsibility of exposing other people's children to a movie that is rated PG-13. It contains sensual scenes and violence. I guess if you tell the parents and they agree to allow their child to go it's ok. At 11, I would stick with Alvin. Who cares if others have seen it if that is the movie she wants to see.

It's a beautiful movie, somewhat violent, very mildly sexual. Don't know if the younger set would appreciate it, but if they do go, 3d is beautiful and amazingly engrossing - it really is like being in another world. Some people get nauseus from the 3d though, but you can get a refund, or see it in regular format (a lot of movies run both types at the same time).

Maybe Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs? Don't know if it's still playing somewhere...

Have fun!

I have to agree with those that cautioned against it. I think that the subject matter is a bit mature for younger kids/preteens: scantily clad but anatomically similar Avatars and violence. Honestly, I can't see young girls enjoying it all that much. From my experience with my 4 kids is that they can watch the same movie over and over again (and especially if it's in the theater!). I wouldn't worry that the other kids have already seen it.
Good Luck!

My family went to see it in Houston...I didn't go. My brother said that I should not take my son. He did not feel it was appropriate for the kids that were in the theater when they were there. My brother is not one to make statements like this about a movie unless he really feels it isn't appropriate.

HI E.,

I agree with the first post and stick with Alvin. It's a good enough movie for those who have seen it once wouldn't mind seeing it again. My kids watch the first Alvin dvd all the time and never get tired of it.
From what I've heard of Avatar is it's not directed towards kids, yes it's beautiful but more of an adult level movie and not something kids would understand too well. You can't go wrong with the chipmunks, have fun!!

My husband took our 12 year old son and a friend - they loved it.

Avatar has futuristic battle scenes involving aircraft, missiles, flame throwers, and machine guns being used against a native humanoid race armed only with arrows. And it is 3 HOURS long. Those are my only cautions. Otherwise, the movie is one of the BEST I've seen. I am in awe of the imagination(s) that created a entire new planet with strange animals and beautiful plants. My 12-year-old son and friend loved it. The message of the movie is similar to Dances with Wolves: newcomers regard the native population as low-life savages. This justifies killing them and taking their land.

My advice is on other considerations for a movie party, we took a group to the movies several years ago and my plan was to watch the movie then go to a pizza place afterward, my sweet hubby didn't realize I wasn't planning on purchasing popcorn and drinks for everyone, so when our daughter asked for snacks the whole group got in line and started ordering! Have a plan in place and be sure your child knows before hand what will be purchased and when..that lack of commuication cost us about $80 more than I had budgeted! Then to top it off, the kids were begging for quarters to play the arcade games at the pizza place, costing us another $50. Not the best plans on our part, so I'm sharing our mistake to spare others from making them :)

Another thing to consider is how long Avatar is..I have heard it is about 3 hours..not exactly sure, but that it was very long. Alvin would be a better choice for sure. My kids never mind seeing a movie more than once. Have fun! ~A.~
