Moms Trying to Be More Eco Friendly

I recycle, bring my little tote bags to the grocery store, try to clean with environmentally friendly products (most of the time), but I am certainly far from perfect. I would like to know if there are other moms in the Royal Oak area that are interested in getting together to discuss ways that we can leave a better planet to our children. I am thinking a very casual, fun gathering once per month? Perhaps we share magazine subsriptions, offer environmentally friendly tips, etc. In my opinion if everyone made even small changes we could really make an impact on the planet.

This is a newly formed Yahoo group that talk about these sort of things. It was created by a member of my homeschool group and I believe she lives in Oakland County.

I'm not a mom yet, but I would be interested in getting together if you don't mind a non-mom... Hubby and I are currently trying to have a baby, so I wouldn't feel left out of baby item discussions, I'm fascinated with making my own baby food, cloth diapering, etc. =)

We are just starting to become more eco-friendly -- we have a long way to go still, but at least we're starting somewhere!

I do the same, Live in Madison Hts (near Royal Oak) and love implementing the process into my business as well! I really like the Method brand cleaners from Target as they are reasonably priced and smell very good! I also just use plain vinegar/water, too. For germ control I do have a great alternative that is citrus based.

It helps me when I use some of my oils in my cleaning (very sparingly and only when we have sick people in the house!) for major disinfection. We did very well this past winter with only the flu (when my son went to daycare and brought it home to us.)

For mom's that love body care: Lush is AWESOME! I would say it is twenty steps above Bath and Bodyworks as well as The Body Shop. It works, and it has more organic fruits/veggies/ oils in it than the other stores, plus it works for the environment by putting out BAR shampoo and conditioners (so you do not have the plastic containers!). They are VERY eco-conscious and I HIGHLY recommend you check them out! (if you like to pamper you body w/ results. I use some of their items in my business, now.)

GREAT IDEA S.! :)

S.,

I live in Royal Oak. We recycle whatever we can, I use the canvas shopping bags, and I am researching starting my own compost pile in my backyard. I share my mom magazines with friends, clean with natural cleaners (love white vinegar), and just try to be more aware of what I am doing.

I am involved in a few groups, but hey what is one more. LOL.

Love Trader Joe's, wish I could afford Whole Foods. Shop at Farmers Market in the summer and love Dirty Girl Farm products (sold at RO farmers market).

Count me in.

HI S., I may be interested...I live in W. Bloomfield (moved from Berkley when my daughter was born in 2004) so RO is a little far for me but let's see what we can do. I also want to mention to you that I have a blog called www.lesstoxicbeauty.com. I review less toxic beauty products/ toiletries that are earth friendly. I also have good earth friendly tips on there. check it out!! My email address is on the blog as well.

HI S.
I'm in Dearborn Hts, but very interested in meeting earth friendly mamas. You could start a yahoo chat & play group depending on how many people are interested & there location. I use the plastic bags from cereal at the produce market, instead of those flimsy ones they have. There easy to wash and reuse many times. I choose not to buy things with excess packaging, and sometimes call the co to tell them so. I called Trader Joes and found out there working on making all there baged items recyclable, or compostable. I just started composting, and am excited about how much that will cut down our trash. We also include our 5yo we talk about all the earth friendly things we do and why it good for the earth. Read the book the Lorax, thats a great one. We also like the Berenstain Bears books, they have a Don't Pollute (Anymore) one for this theme.
Good luck in finding lots of earth mamas, A. H

My name is C. and I have two toddlers (2&1). I live in FH which isn't far from you. I am way behind some of the moms who also responded to you but really want to work on this. So far we just bring our own bags to the grocery store and stopped buying water bottles. I am really interested in hearing about composting -- I feel like my little ones waste a lot of food! Let me know. My email is ____@____.com.
