Moms That BF for More than 6 Months

I have been exclusively breastfeeding for almost 6 months now and still have not had a period. I occasionally spot a little every 2-3 weeks. Last week I spotted the most. For the past two days I have been having hot and cold flashes and a little bit of light headedness. Could it just be my hormones from not having a period in over a year or Im just getting sick? Has anyone else experience crazy hormones while breastfeeding?

What can I do next?

I never had a period for over a year when I was breastfeeding. The symptoms of the hot and cold flashes and lightheadedness could be hormones and you could also be getting sick.

I bf my youngest daughter for over three years. With her, I didn't start my period again until she was over a year old. The only time I ever felt like that is either one, I was getting sick (it sounds like you may be too with the hot & cold flashes) or two, low blood sugar. Make sure to drink plenty of water and have several small healthy snacks during the day. Just keep some simple snacks in easy reach such as dried fruit, carrots, a bowl of cherry tomatoes w/ a bit of avocado, etc. Don't just drink a big glass of juice, a pop or eat a candy bar to get your sugar levels up because while it will work quickly, the resultant crash later is not fun. It's just a temporary thing.

do you break out in a cold sweat? That happens to me when I my sugar levels crash. not the spotting, but the hot/cold flashes and the lightheadedness. When that happens I drink a soda or eat something. The best thing for me is to never get too hungry. It's a symptom of my hypoglycemia.

I BF both of my children and I didn't get a period until about 14 months later, that is normal. Everyone is different. Remember to drink plenty of water, take some breaks during the day instead of trying to get all the things around the house done (or you will get tired & draggy). Have small snacks throughout the day, protein based things like yogurt, nuts and add some lean meats in your diet. If it continues, check with your doctor to see what is going on.

I bf for about a year I do remember being really hungry, really thristy and light headed if I didn't eat enough. Hot and cold flashes...I would they are from the hormones. If they continue you can always phone your doctor and if she/he thinks it sounds fishy they'll have you come in. Better safe than sorry. It's just so hard to tell because your body hasd been through so much...all worth it but still alot...good luck

My daughter will be six months on the 8th. I just had my first period a couple weeks ago. I've been having some lightheadedness, too, but I attribute it to being overtired and not always getting enough water (I returned to work on the 4th and haven't adjusted quite yet). As for the hot and cold... sounds very familiar, lol. Still, if you're concerned, it's never a bad idea to check with your doctor.

Hormones crazy, yes. Not hot flashes, but I did not have a period after my first child until he was about 8 or 9 months old (I nursed 11 1/2 months) and after my second I did not have one until he was just a year old (I nursed 13 1/2 months). Once it came back after my second I had crazy, irregular, and heavy cycles and all sorts of weird bleeding. If you are having any weird spotting it might be helpful to start keeping a menstrual chart (my doctor gave me one) just to keep track of anything weird if you need to look back for patterns once things really start back up. I think I was getting anemic when I was having heavy periods for two weeks at a time and had to start taking iron because I was getting so dizzy. Since you're breastfeeding, keep taking your prenatal vitamins if you stopped at any time. That might help a bit, too.

I don't have a period at least for 14 months after I have a baby. It is normal. I never spot though. You might be getting sick, perhaps you are low on iron. How are your ears? Do they feel clogged at all? If so, you might try ear candles. Try boosting your immune system. Hope you are feeling better soon.

Yes, I BF my son for 9.5 months and I did not have a period at all, not even spotting. When I started the weaning process at 9 months...that when I got my period. I did have a bit of spotting after my period for an extra week, so I did go to the doc and was told that its old blood and that I shouldn't worry about it.
I think you are fine...enjoy the BF...I miss it sometimes :)
