I got my daughter a book called "The Care and Keeping of You"(It is one of the American Girl series). It explains everything girls can expect as they go through adolescence. My daughter thought the book was great and I was glad to find something in print that was well written and illustrated.

I second the recommendation for "The Care and Keeping of You" book! My daughter was only 8 when she began show obvious signs of puberty! This book has helped tremendously!

Raising teen girls going thru puberty gets very challenging. But it does get better. My daughter is now 14 and has somewhat leveled back out. Their bodies go thru hormone rush months before their first period and then gradually the levels come back to normal. Kinda like us going thru menopause except the reverse. I was seriously thinking that aliens had taken over what had been my very sweet, loving, level headed daughter! I just tried to be as patient as possible and I prayed A LOT !!
There are some good books on raising teens. If there is anything else I can do to help...a shoulder to cry on :) just let me know!

What do you need to know? I have an 11 year old daughter who has her period... and I am a childbirth educator and birth doula, so I am used to discussing fertility bodily functions with people all day long... LOL

She should be old enough to take advil and PMS medicine -- I'd check with your or her doctor on the correct dosage.
If it's heavy and painful, you might check with a gynecologist to rule out endometriosis.

my daughter will be 12 in July, luckily she hasn't had her period yet, but I bought her some books on puberty and she read them and they really helped her to understand what is going on with her body and how to cope with it. I found the books at amazon.com
