Mom with Weird Symptoms

Well, maybe my symptoms aren't so much weird as they are random and on-going. If you don't want to hear gross details, don't read this. Sorry.

I've been nursing for 13.5 months now and only do it about 3 times a day on both sides. My son is very attached to the whole process, but because of my weird symptoms lately I've felt even more inclined to wean him. So, I'm wondering if anyone else has had similar symptoms after nursing a child this long or if maybe it has nothing to do with my hormones and sounds like something else. Of course it could be nothing.

Because I nurse less now than I used to, I thought maybe I was ovulating and am going to have my period soon. I've been super nauseous off and on for weeks now (took home pregnancy test a week ago--negative). I've had stomach pain, ovarian and uteral pain (like cramps a little), excess vaginal discharge, I'm tired, bloated feeling now. But a couple of days ago I had really painful diarrhea for a night (several times), and have had it occasionally on other days as well. Then couldn't eat for a day or two, now I just feel sick. And yesterday I had a tinge of blood in my discharge when I went to the bathroom, but not much blood like a period. All this sorta sounds like the onset of a period and maybe since my body's not used to it since I haven't had one in almost 2 years, it's just putting a lot of stress on me. I haven't had a period just because I was pregnant and have been nursing.

If this sounds familiar to anyone, please tell me. I'm a little concerned but don't want to go to the doctor to have them tell me that it could be anything or nothing. Thanks for any responses that could help.

What can I do next?

That sounds like both of my "first" periods after my kids were born (and I'm so jealous on the 13.5 months of no period! Nursing hasn't helped me keep it at bay that long *pout* LOL)

Right before my period, I always get diarrhea-y. Crampy, too. My milk supply goes down, so the baby tugs, fusses and chews while nursing, which is miserable, since my breasts and nipples are tender. And, yup, it was all worse before the first one, for about a week! Then, when my period starts, my milk supply picks back up to normal within a few hours, making the baby full and sleepy, the cramps let up after a day or so, the headache goes away (I usually take to bed with a migraine the day before I start), and my mood takes a definite upswing.

Give it 24 hours and see if you don't "really" start.

Oh yeah, and there's a stomach bug with cramping and all kinds of ick going around that's supposed to last about 24 hours. If you have THAT, instead, it should go away fast.

Good luck and hang in there!

Hi J.. It sounds like you have a viral infection. The blood in your womanly area may have been from having diarreah so bad the night before. I had the same exact symptoms this past week (with the exception of nursing, because I'm not). You should see your doctor. He'll prescribe you antibiotics that will take care of it quickly. You should also request a pregnancy test from him just to make sure. You don't want him to prescribe you something that can hurt the baby if there is even a slight possibility that you may be expecting. Hope this helps!

Hi J.. I am thirty nine years old, and breast fed my youngest son for thirteen months. I had no symptoms or problems. I do not mean to alarm you, but please make an appointment with your doctor for an ovarian cancer screening. If it is nothing, you can breathe a sigh of relief. I have two friends who are awesome o. cancer survivors, partially because they caught it early. Please keep me posted.
