Hey N.. I just finished Safe Start with my 12 month old daughter. This is put on through the YMCA. It is a little bit pricier but I felt like it was worth it. It is a survival swim course. They teach the children how to survive in the water if they need to. Very very great class and the instructor I had was great. www.safestart.cc Also I just enrolled her in another swim class through Sharks and Minnows that I am pretty excited about. They have these classes pretty much every where. http://www.sharksandminnows.com/content/default.asp
This class seems a little less intense than safe start and a little bit more social (safe start is one on one - other is group) Hope this helps a bit!

SafeStart is a program that requires you to go each day for 10 min. a day for 6 weeks. If you Google it, you can find places in your area that offer the program.

Hello N.,

People have recommended the YMCA at Blanchard Park. I was thinking about taking my two children there, but they offer the swimming lessons during the weekdays. We can't take them on the weekdays because I run a home childcare and I close late. We have decided to teach them ourselves. We have checked out a video from the library, "Swim with Kim" and so far, the children are doing well. I have also checked out the book, "Learn to Swim" by Rob & Kathy McKay. Our children are no longer afraid of having water in their face. So if the techniques works for them, it'll work on any child. They LOVE the water. It may take all summer for them to learn, but we're spending quality time together. I do know that the Fort Gatlin park offers classes for 1/2 the price of the YMCA. It's a bit far, but it's highly recommended. We do plan on taking our children there at least once a month (when it gets warmer), just for fun. I hope that this information has helped you.

I also did the Safe Start program through the YMCA (you don't have to be a member). We just finished with my son's first lessons and he is just about to turn 2. It was amazing....one on one, and it truly teaches your child how to swim and survive in the water.

and i know there are a couple of Y's on the east side--one off of Rouse and another near the Oviedo Mall...
