I'm pretty sure I'm going through a miscarriage right now. I have no idea what to expect or what's going to happen. I'm emotionally ok with this, I know this means that the baby wasn't going to be healthy and I'm glad I wasn't further along then 5 weeks. My questions are these: How long will I bleed for? Is it like a period and I can expect it to be over in a few days? So far the flow is the same as my normal period. Is it ok to use a tampon? When can we start trying for our second child again? How does the effect my period tracking and other TTC efforts? So many questions so any stories or experiences will be helpful. I do have a dr appointment on Thursday, but want to get an idea of the path I'm heading down. Thank you all for sharing something so personal!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone for all your input. You all helped me through the waiting period until my dr appointment to find out what to do. I'm in the process of doing blood work every 72 hours for 3 draws to make sure the baby is gone. She told me that we should hold off on trying and use protection until the beginning of the year. That's the hardest part for us, since we've been trying since last February. So far I'm doing good, I'm just really tired. I'm glad the appointment is over and now I'm focusing on losing some weight and enjoying time with my baby girl and my husband. Keep focused on the good stuff. Thank you all so much, you will never know how much your support helped me.

My first miscarriage I had a D&C. I had a second miscarriage 6 months later and did NOT have a D&C. We had moved so it was with a different doctor. I got pregnant a month after the second and that pregnancy was fine. Both miscarriages were at 5 weeks or so. I have sort of regretted the D&C I had the first time because it I felt it was "unnatural". My first miscarriage I found out at the ultrasound and the second miscarriage I started bleeding. Maybe that was the reason for the D&C for the first - to expel the pregnancy because it wasn't expelling itself. Good-luck.

I had to have a D&C after my miscarriage, but I was further along than you. I'm glad you're feeling ok about it; once I looked upon my miscarriage the same way you are I felt fine about it.

Hi C.- I'm so sorry about the end of your pregnancy. It sounds like you are dealing with it really well. I too had a miscarriage at about 10 weeks in between my girls (now 6 & 10). It was really sad but I also looked at it from the perspective that that fetus wasn't viable and nature took it's course. I really didn't want a D & C and was able to avoid one. Some doctors will push this so if you'd prefer not to be prepared in case yours does. It was a very simple and relatively painless process. A few days of cramping and no more blood than a really heavy period. I did not use tampons as I felt emotionally and physically I wanted to let my body take care of it. Be sure to take care of yourself as it is an emotional process no matter how well you deal with it. Don't expect a lot from yourself for a few days and be sure to allow yourself to mourn a little if you need to. I found I was mostly sad about a loss of expectations and plans. It was hard to change my thinking from pregnant person to non-pregnant. I was told to wait three months to get pregnant again and found that I was carrying my second daughter almost immediately after that. Since we only wanted two kids I sometimes think I wouldn't have my sweet baby girl if it wasn't for the loss of that second pregnancy. Take care of yourself and remember to take the time to rest and let yourself feel whatever you need to. Good luck!
