Milkies or Breast Shells for Milk Collection While Nursing?

I'm expecting baby #2 in the next few weeks. With #1, I nursed for almost two years, and I think I used breast pads the whole time, leaking a lot, from what I remember. I'm thinking of getting Milkies to collect the milk that leaks from the non-nursing breast, but I just saw that the Avent breast shells can also be used for milk collection. I've read lots of good reviews on Milkies. Can anyone comment on the breast shells for milk collection? Someone who could compare the two would be great. the Avent shells (comes with two) are half the price of Milkies, which only includes one. Also for you second + time mommies, was your milk supply similar with your first and subsequent babies. I have a friend who never leaked a drop, so I'd hate to spend the money on these if I won't use them. thanks a lot!@

So What Happened?

I got the Milkies. I used it a ton at first and collected a lot of milk. Too bad baby won't take a bottle, but that's a whole other post. I still use it on occasion if I'm overly full. DD is 6 months, and I'm still spraying halfway across the room when she comes off my nipple sometimes, and my breast pads often weigh a ton. I could use the milkies more, but since we haven't been using the milk, it hasn't been a priority. When I do use it, I'm sometimes thinking, "what's that noise" and it's the sound of the milk spraying into it. I also got the Lily padz. Unfortunately, they only stayed sticky about two weeks for me...maybe because of my overproduction of milk (very often milk collected under it then leaked out). I contacted the company and they couldn't do anything for me but send me some tips which included washing in the dishwasher, but that made them even less sticky. I'd like to try them again, but hate to waste the $$ since I got burned once.

I actually used Lily Pads and NEVER leaked the only trick is when you take them off have a collection bottle ready to catch becuase the milk will come spewing out ready to go!

I got mine at Target and you only need one or two pairs they are washable and reuseable ... LOVED THEM! I have even been known to bust them out on cold days when I need to have a protector!
I just went to the Milkies website and looked at thier product and I would have chosen at this time to STILL use the LILY pads as opposed to the milk saver. My breasts are oddly shaped and that would NOT have worked for me. With the Lily pad you push your nipple in so it is flat with your breast and it seals it up ... that worked well for me. good luck it is difficult choosing what will work best until you try it but I do not think that product would work for me AT ALL!

I can't speak to the milk collection, but I can tell you that for me, I had way more milk with #1 than #2. Part of that was that #1 just ate more, and from the get-go; my second was a little more finicky at the beginning. I still leaked, but not nearly as much. I think it will depend on your new baby's eating habits. Best of luck, and congrats on breastfeeding!

I am nursing baby #3 right now. A friend of mine is letting me borrow her Milkies, but I didn't start using it until my baby was about six weeks. My supply was already pretty well regulated, so I have not been leaking as much as I did at the beginning. I still use the Milkies and collect up to half an ounce at a time, which is worth it to me. I have spilled the milk once, but I have been careful to remove the milk saver before bending over and have not had that problem again. My milk supply was incredible with #1 and much less with #2 and #3, but I think it is worth it to collect the milk anyway, especially if you start right when baby is born. Sorry that I haven't had any experience with the breast shells.

Couple of things...my milk production is ~2000X more with my second baby. So much so that the baby had a hard time latching in the hospital once my milk came in on day 4 (I had to stay longer to do some muscle work they had to do in my abdomen from pg complications). The hospital brought me the hard shields (don't know what brand, I can't find the box) but I got them for free from the lactation consultant. You may want to buy one and then not open them and keep the receipt and ask the lactation consultant in the hospital and maybe you'll be lucky like me. One note, the ones they gave me had "air" holes I guess, so if I bent over without thinking, it would spill out (and I emptied every hour). I put them in the bottle sterilizer then pour the milk into a collection bag and at the end of the day into the freezer. Good luck.

i am actually expecting #4 in the next few weeks and thinking of buying this product. i have read excellent reviews on it and i think it is worth trying. my milk supply has been different with each child depending on how well they nurse. i will probably wait to get it until after the baby is born and i see what kind of nurser it is. :)

I don't have suggestions on the products you mention, but I wanted to add my experience. I leaked a ton with my first and used boxes and boxes of disposable breast pads. I figured it would be the same for baby #2 - but I never leaked a drop with him! I still have a 1/2 box of pads leftover from my first because I literally only used a handful of pads for #2. It was the weirdest thing - I thought for sure it would be the same with both! Oh, and I nursed/pumped for a year for each of them.

I got something from the Hospital. They gave them to me. I can't remember the brand, but one thing that I didn't like was there was a hole near the top and in front and when I bent over the milk would leak all over. Yup I had some great moments with them. Sorry can't remember the brand, but I just know that I wasn't impressed.
