Milk Allergies

I just found out yesterday that my daughter is definately allergic to milk. I am not allowed to give her any milk or milk products. The dr. said she might out grow it but my chances are better if I do not give her anything with milk products in it. I never realized how many products had milk in them. WOW!! I was wondering if anyone else has to deal with this problem, and what kind of meals they fix for their children. They also tested her for a soy allergy but that came back fine however it also gives her really bad diareha. I am supposed to meet with a nutritionist but they haven't set the appointment yet so I was wondering what to do until then. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance.

Hi J.,

You'll have to bake from scratch a lot more since mixes often have dry milk in them. My advice is to start slowly and keep it simple. Instead of cereal with milk for breakfast try alternatives like instant oatmeal with fruit or grits and eggs. For lunches try beans and rice with chips or tuna with tomato, rice cakes and peanut butter with fruit or even carefully chosen canned soup. For snacks try tortilla chips, frozen bannana or other whole fruits, popcorn, dried fruit. There are always dairy free mixes, breads, cookies, cereal bars, crackers and other treats at places like Whole Foods and the health food sections at Krogers. They're expensive and don't taste as good but it's better than nothing.

You could try Rice Dream rice milk for use in cereal, etc. My oldest drank that until he was about 2 because we thought he might have a milk intolerance. You can usually find it either in the organic section or the baking section of the store. We always got the enriched vanilla and it doesn't cause the gastro-upset that soy often does. One thing you do need to watch in that is the sugar though. Good luck.

Yeah the doctor is right, she will grow out of it. My twin had a milk-protein allergy when they were babies. They were one this really expenese formula, but once they hit around a year and 3 months they had grown out of it. The oldest one is now Lactose-intolorent which has nothing to do with the allergy but it is still a pain in the butt. The youngest one is just fine she can have everything dairy. I also did daycare and one little girl I watched was allergic to just about everything. She ate almost everthing that was wheat, she also could have one type of juice. Work with the nutritionist and they will make it a lot easier.

J.,
I don't know if you are from Fort Wayne or not, but regardless, the info I have could be used anywhere. I cannot have milk either, which I didn't discover until two years ago when I was 28. What a shock! Anyhow, one of my favorite places to shop is our local food co-op called Three Rivers Food Co-op -- it is a natural foods store (almost every city has one or a "health food store" that is like it). They are very "user friendly" when it comes to food allergies. They have tons of dairy free options, including muffins and cookies they bake from scratch and other dinner options in their deli. They also have lots of diary free treats and snacks. One of the things I use a lot is the "veggie" cheese slices and shreds available at the grocery store -- usually in the vegetable aisle. If you can find a dairy-free bread, you can make all sorts of sandwiches with the veggie-cheese and lunch meats. I hope this helps. I at least can have a little dairy every now and then, but it is going to be challenging to completely eliminate it!

You can also try rice milk. My massage therapy teacher says her children were allergic to milk and they didn't care for soy milk but they loved rice milk. When she would bake she would use soy milk and they were fine with it. To find things with more soy products rather than milk try health food stores. If you have questions try calling the Hobb's Nutrion Store in Alexandria, IN. That store is owned by the founder's/owners of Alexandria School of Scientific Theraputics, Inc. They know all sorts of things about healthy ways of living and if you call the store they would probably be able to tell you a lot more. They are wonderful!!

Don't worry, you will get the hang of all of it! My daughter has milk allergies, we eat vegan food, you can find it at Trader Joes, look online for vegan recipes, and where you can find vegan food. Doesn't mean you can't have meat, it is just that simple! Vegans do not eat anything with any animal byproduct that includes milk, so that is what we do. It took awhile but after that it just becomes second nature and actually my health even improved not just hers. So goodluck ( and make sure you do meet with the nutritionist, that was somewhat helpful for us)

Work at home....hmmm what type of work?

Well my neice was allergic to milk. She out grew it at about 18 month or so. My brother-in-law would take the soy formula she was on and mix that with her meals instead of milk. There are several things you can do. The only thing that is hard to remember all the time were cheese products. Even like cheez-its have milk. Well I know it isn't much but I hope it helps a little. Don't be afraid to be creative when it comes to meal ideas. How old is your daughter? That also plays a big role in what to feed her.

both my kids were lactose intollerant til each was about 3 or 3 1/2. I learned real quick that there is lactose free milk you can use, it tastes funny to use it on cereal but for cooking it works great, no strange tastes on the food & you use it just like regular milk. hot dogs have lactose in them. some peanut butters do also. bread most the time does (though I used the french bread you buy in the bakery section & cut into slices with no problems). trying to remember some other tidbits I noticed the hard way, as I think of more I'll post them

Try giving her goats milk if soy upsets her digestive system. Goats milk has been used sucessfully for years as a substitute for cows milk. Most health food stores carry it, and it tastes decent! If your child may not like it, (But you never know until you try!), add some flavored syrup...like chocolate or strawberry. Good luck to you!
