Hi

I am almost 5 months postpartum, still breastfeeding (expressing the milk because the baby does not latch) once or twice a day, and for the past few days I've started having mentruation like cramps and pain, is this normal? Is this a sign the menstruation is just around the corner? I plan to see the doctor soon.
Your opinion is highly appreciated.

What can I do next?

Hello, Having mentstral like cramps and pain is normal and likely to occur throughout breastfeeding, it will come and go. Also you may notice that while your pumping/breastfeeding the cramps may be more intensified, and this is normal too. Some women can even have a period during breastfeeding. If you can- check with your obgyn for a lactation consultant or if theres a Nurse Practioner at your obgyn leave a message for her with your concerns and have her get back to you, or make an appt with her or the lactation consultant. I would especially express to them that the baby does not latch, there maybe some tools to help with this and you will feel much reward for your bond with your baby if you can have direct contact. you may also try "marsupial time" with your baby and this is a natural instinct for mammals like kangaroos- Now I know this sounds funny but studies have shown that when mother and baby have direct skin to skin contact (laying diapered only baby to your bare chest) that the too of you get in sync with each other, it slows the heartrate and work load and dispenses oxygen throughout better and creates that closeness. Dad can do this also. Now your baby is 5 months and this is usually when their appetite increases ask your pediatrician when you can start introducing stage 1 baby foods or prepare your own for your baby. Your pediatrician may also be a great resource for your lactation concerns ask to speek to the nurse there, or make an appt. and be sure to tell them also about your baby not latching and request them to check babys mouth. Ok I hope this helps!! Take Care

I had this for several months during the time that I was ovulating and sometimes it was really painful.(Started around 5-6 months postpartum now that I think about it.) I had never had it before giving birth to my son. I asked my OB and she said it was completely normal and even had a name for it. Then thankfully it just went away. I was breastfeeding too, but also having my period.

Just my experience.

This happened to me with my second child and my period returned. Just throwing this out there, but I had pretty severe cramping during implantation. Could you possibly be pregnant? Hope you doctor can find the cause. Feel better.

If you are breastfeeding, two things, maybe you will get your period, I never had my period while breastfeeding, but when you are breastfeeding, your uterus will contract, that is one of the great benefits of breastfeeding.....your uterus will contract and shrink up....but seek your OB just to ease your concerns and make sure that is what it is and they will tell you what you can take for those since you are breastfeeding. Congratulations!!!

I nursed my youngest till he was about 10 mo old. As long as I wasn't out to eat or didn't have someone around affended by the beastfeeding he was nurse - which ment that he would get formula bottles about 3-4 times a month if that. Saying that - my period returned before I went for my 6 week check up after delievery... I actually had to reschedule the visit because of it. So, yes it can be normal for the cycle to return when you are still nursing.
