California has state funded medical insurance.
Google search it.
Or try these links for info

Also, he needs to watch his diet and what he eats.
My late Dad was Diabetic.
He saw a Nutritionist, so that, he/my Mom could learn about how he needs to eat, per his health.
Also, your Husband should exercise. Even just walking up and down the street. It does not have to be strenuous.

If an emergency comes up take him to the ER, by law they have to see him, treat him, and stabilize him. They will still write out prescriptions if he needs them, give him the care he needs at the moment and will bill him for the services.

Target and Walmart offer $4 prescriptions, and even $10 for a 3-month prescription, (the doctor has to write it out that way for them to accept it,) so make sure you're getting the lowest prices on his medications to cut costs.

Continue to go to the low income clinic and have him get as much of his care there as possible, the clinic I went to before I moved only charged $10 a visit which I gladly paid. The clinic may also have lower prices on supplies like his glucose meter and strips, so ask. If he doesn't use the Medi-cal (Medicaid in states other than California) services he doesn't have to pay the deductible, so save that for if he has a true emergency and has to be hospitalized.

Control his diabetes and hypertension with diet, exercise and medications to head off any costly emergency care. Either of these can cause serious complications down the line if not controlled, like kidney failure, dialysis, congestive heart failure, blindness, strokes and/or heart attacks. See if the clinic can refer him to a registered dietician (even if you have to pay something for it) who can help him with a meal plan and a list of the foods he should be eating and avoiding to stay healthy. Preventive care is always easier, cheaper and preferable to costly emergency care.

God bless.

I'm confused.
You don't have insurance but your husband has medical?
I'm sorry, I'm not clear on what that means.
If you have no/cannot afford insurance, look into Medicaid.
Is it $1400 contribution per month for his medical coverage or a $1400 monthly deductible, which seems very odd.......

The american diabetes assoc might help with low/no cost supplies, if you qualify:

I'm sorry I can't help more.

Check with the state. My girlfriend was insulin-dependent and had no medical insurance. She got Medical that covers only her diabetes-related expenses, i.e., insulin, insulin supplies, any doctor/hospital visits due to diabetes-related problems. And in case of an emergency hospitalization, the hospital will insist that you apply for emergency Medi-Cal to cover the hospitalization. Hopefully you would qualify.

Im an insurance agent in AZ. I don't think the $1400 is the deductible but the monthly payment. There is a website offered that covers you NO MATTER what your health history is. The premiums used to be 50% more but they have dropped them since the Obama Healthcare has been talked about. I believe it is available in every state but not positive. You can see if its something that may work for you. The website is http://www.healthcare.gov I hope this helps you. Good luck.

Glo:

I've never heard of a $1,400 monthly deductible...

If you have an emergency - you go to the E.R. - they have to take you whether or not you have insurance...

Start doing research on medi-cal and go to the California state website to find out what social/government programs you qualify for.

Good luck!

I suggest he may be eligible for insurance from the state (Medicaid). Look up medicaid and your state's name on the Internet.

If your husband can work both you and him need to be out day and night looking for a job or training for a caree day and night...any job that had insurance. I would take a job at star bucks, target, anyplace that had health insurance as a benefit for you and your dependents. Being without insurance is really just playing with fire on hospital stay can literally wipe out a family. Take this very seriosly and do whatever you can to get some kind of job with insurance as a benefit.

A $1,400 deductible per month????? I've never heard of such a thing. I would look into that. You say he has "medical", what to you mean? Major medical? If yes, that should mean he would be covered for any emergency care that may be required.

Ask at the clinic, they may be able to let you know what type of plans they work with. You should also contact your state and see if he qualifies for any type of state health insurance.

Your question is conflicting with having "medical" but no insurance. I'm going to assume you don't have it becuase the premium is too expensive. If he already has a primary care doctor-try and work out a discounted fee for appointments. Speak them about lower cost medications. A lot BP meds are inexpensive. Diabetic medications are another story-they can be VERY expensive. See which ones cost the least and switch to the those. It is sooo important to keep his BP under control and his blood sugars under control especially without medical insurance. A lot of people say "oh the hospital rights it off." That isn't true. They can and will come after you for payment when all is said and done. While they are required to treat him in the event of an emergency there is no follow up care and no guarantee an ED will write a refill script. If he does have an emergency then please go to the ED, but for just routine care you are going to be better off either going to a clinic or following up with his doc at a negotiated rate. You can always apply for medicaid- or medical (? as I believe it is called in CA). The worse they will tell you is no. You can stop by your local ED and see if they have a list of resources for the uninsured. I know the hospital I work at does. Check with the office where someone would apply for food stamps as they may have a list of resources for you too. Good luck, and please please please make sure your husband takes care of him self. Proper diet, weight loss (if needed) will also help keeping BP and glucose under control. Unfortunately he is at a much higher risk for kidney problems, heart attacks, and strokes. Also if meds are too expensive check with the pharmacutical companies about programs. I have a family member who is on a very expensive medication but because his income is low the pharmacutical company supplements the majority of the cost. It is the only way this needed med would be possible for him.

If you do have an emergency come up the hospital more than likely has a program to help low income families. They often just write the bills off to you and get the funding back in ways through grants and monies donated. I don't have insurance either, we live on SSDI and the kids get child support. He has Medicare and the kids have state insurance, I get nothing, we make too much money for me to get a medical card or use the free clinic at the hospital. Sometimes you just have to trust that it will be taken care of. Bill collectors can call every day but if you don't have the money you just don't have the money. We need more government money spent on health care that is effective and for people who cannot afford to buy insurance. If I could spend money to buy insurance we'd be eating much better because I'd be spending more on groceries and buy healthier food.

Hello, I don't know about where your are living, but in San Diego, we have County Medical Services (CMS). Check with the clinic and see if they have paperwork for that.
Good luck.
