Hi Ladies,

My husband and I would like to find a good marriage counselor in the Metrowest area. We thought we'd try a year ago but never did. Unfortunately, the three recommendations given then weren't in our Tufts network so I thought I'd ask again as we'd like to set something up this week.

We'd greatly appreciate your recommendations, along with any thoughts to share about what makes him/her so great. Thank you!

So What Happened?

We did find a good therapist ultimately, but learned a couple of lessons in the process. Many therapists are sole practitioners, so oftentimes you'll get voice mail when trying to call for an appointment. Other times, you'll get a live person, but there may not be any openings for a while. The lesson learned is, don't wait until the point of crisis to seek help as it can take a while to actually be seen. And don't think you have to be married to benefit from this type of service. They now call it Couples Counseling, realizing that those who aren't married often need some assistance too to figure out how to make a relationship work. They'll bill the sessions under one of your insurance accounts. Course, if you're single, a good therapist can help you sort through things too...

I'd say if your insurance company provides the benefits, take advantage of a professional who can help you sort out the values and baggage you both brought into the relationship from your upbringings, and come up with a plan to figure out how to mutually meet both your needs and your partner's.

Thanks to those who offered referrals; unfortunately they weren't on our in-network list but we did find someone good right in the next town.

Hi C.,

I don't have a specific recommendation except if your church has a counsellor or can perhaps make a recommendation...try there because they will be genuinely interested in saving a marriage.

Blessings.....

Hi,
don't know if you found someone, but if you are still looking, you can call NASW (the National Association of Social Workers) in the Boston Area, and they have a social worker referral service - you can give them the area you are looking for and which insurance you have (if you plan to use it), and they can give you several suggestions.

Good Luck!
Warmly,
E.

Hi C.,
I recommend Christine Nevins, PhD. She's located in Natick. Her number is ###-###-####. I have worked with her one-on-one, not in couples, on marital issues (among other issues). She sees various sides of an issue, has a good memory (you're not constantly reminding her of small things), and can relate situations to other things that you might have told her. And I think she has a comforting presence.

On a logistical note, she offers evening hours and her office is easy to find and is quiet, private, and comfortable.

Good luck!

Hi, I am not sure if you have already found someone but my husband and I saw an excellent therapist in Lexington named Amy Gerson, Ph.D. and also Molly Howes, Ph.D. in Natick. Both are experienced, able to see issues from both sides and provide very helpful advice very tactfully. I would recommend both of them very highly. Good luck!
