I am getting married in November to the best guy in the world! The vendor search is starting, and I'm looking for a great bakery/baker to make our cake. We would like each layer to be different flavors, and simple decoration (florist will decorate with fresh flowers). Oakland/Berkeley area preferred. Thanks so much, Moms!

Hi J. - I used Walnut Creek Baking company for my wedding cake. They were great to work with. We also had each layer a different flavor. I know it's not the Oak/Berk area but they do deliver.

We used Sweet Adeline on the Berkeley Oakland border. Jennifer Millar is the owner. Not only was the cake really good, it was also extremely affordable. Here is a link to the website: http://www.sweetadelinebakeshop.com/

I'm sure you'll be bombarded with responses.

My nephew is a pastry chef, and I have seen (and tasted) at least one of his wedding cakes! Simple and Yum. He has created all sorts of cakes for me. A swimming pool cake for a graduation party, a happy feet cake with penguins, a baby shower cake with different flavored fillings, etc.

Let me know if you want me to get his contact info. These were all "side jobs" for family/friends. But he works for Patisserie Ganache in San Bruno.

Congrats!

I second the Neldams suggestion. We use them all the time for birthday cakes as well. Rumor has it though that the city was raising the rent (or something like that) and when that happened, they were going to close the business. I have no idea if it's true though. Hopefully this is just a rumor because their cakes are amazing!!!

A good friend of mine (also an East Bay native) has her own pastry business. She uses amazing ingredients and has a real flair for the beautiful too. She made our wedding cake and it drew rave reviews. Her email is ____@____.com you have any questions, also feel free to email me at ____@____.com. I'd be happy to email you a photo of our cake if you're interested.

You must get your cake from Julie Durkee of Torino Bakery!. Her cakes are works of art & she will design anything you want & customize flavors. We brought in a photo from a magazine & she duplicated it perfectly. Believe it not, her cakes actually even taste better than they look. Trust me, everyone will actually eat the cake at your wedding. Julie is also the niceslt woman. When we went in for the tasting (the best part) w/ my in-laws, she could not have been more delightful & fun to work with. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

Dear J.,

I would highly reccomend Julie Durkee, who owns Torino Baking in Berkeley. I used to work as a floral designer in San Francisco and we worked together often. I referred her to many brides and everyone always raved about her work. I also highered her to make my cake when I got married. She is very talented, makes beautiful cakes, and they are the best I have ever tasted. I also love that she is easy going, super nice, and etremely creative. She might come up with a design you had neverr thought of that fits you as a couple. I know this sounds a bit strange but it is very true.

Her website is www.torinobaking.com.

Good luck, Happy Wedding and please send Julie my best,

N. Knowdell

I highly recommend Masse's Pastries in Berkeley. They made our wedding cake and we had two different layers. One was an almond cake filled with roasted peaches and torrone mousse (a seasonal cake) and the other was a mocha walnut torte with white chocolate ganache. Not only do their cakes taste fabulous, they look gorgeous too. The passion fruit cake is also wonderful. Definitely schedule a tasting. Paul and Marcia Masse can do almost anything! Plus their prices were really reasonable.

Check out reviews on yelp.com too. Have fun!

Virginia Bakery in Berkeley. They did my wedding cake last year. I had four square tiers, each a different flavor (red velvet, carrot, white with a raspberry filling and chocolate rum raspberry). The cake was delicious, and much less expensive than any other vendor I considered. My cake for 250 people was around $750 or so. Other options I considered were between $1200-$2500, and did not taste all that great. Virginia Bakery does samples a little different -- they make a cake for you to take home so you can try each flavor at your leisure, rather than all at once.

Good luck.

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS!

YUM! http://www.montclairbaking.com/ We had they're Marjolaine for our wedding 13.5years ago, I can still taste it! Unfortunately, I can't just go get a slice, they only carry this flavor as combo as a full cakem not by the slice. sigh....

I also thoroughly enjoyed my friends' wedding cake, which she got at Cake Box Bakery in Lafayette. No website, but here's their info: Cake Box Bakery, 3527 Wilkinson Ln., Lafayette, CA, 94549; Ph: ###-###-####

Believe it or not, we used Merritt Bakery for our cake -- had them frost it very simply because we used fresh flowers as well -- and guests RAVED about it. We also had different flavors for each layer ... and the cake was so affordable! I don't think they delivered (we've been married almost 10 years, so it's hard to remember), but if you have a friend you can enlist to pick it up and bring it to the site, I would totally recommend Merritt.

I used Le Gateau Elegant in Martinez. The cake was SO delicious, we had such a hard time settling on a flavor because they were all fantastic, so I think choosing more than one is a great idea! Anyway, she is one of the only bakers I've ever heard of who never freezes the cakes before decorating, so the flavor was outstanding. Absolutely beautiful too. Ours was simply decorated as well with fresh flowers on top. Congrats on your wedding!

NELDOMS is the best bakery ever! They used to have a Moraga bakery and I'm 99% sure they have one in Piedmont or Oakland.
My brother is the pickiest desert person of all times and has sent back chocolate cake in resturaunts etc. When he brings desert to an event he always brings Neldoms.
Congratulations and good luck!

Of course everyone has their favorite, and mine is MASSES on Shattuck in North Berkeley. We had a three layer cake at our wedding which included passionfruit and white chocolate (their flavors are seasonal). The decorations were fresh orchids.

Yup, Neldam's is great. I got a traditional Danish wedding cake there last year, just like my parents had 30 years before. I also had 3 different cakes from Ladyfingers in Oakland. I highly reccommend tasting at both these places. I ended up with a black bottom cake, a carrot cake and a coconut cake (no boring raspberry filling, thank you). Don't get overwhelmed; have fun!
