Hello,
My daughter has been asking to take swimming lessons. I'm not sure where to take her, etc. At 3 and 1/2 can she take lessons alone (w/ instructor of course) or do the parents get in with the children as well?
Thanks in advance for suggestions! This website is the best!
E.

Hi E.-
Well not as close as you like, but I took my 15 mo for lessons at the YMCA in O'Fallon. I was in the pool with him, and he loved being in the pool and seeing all the activity, but the 30 min lesson was about 10-15 min too long for him, when they made him try to actually do stuff (blow bubbles, move arms and legs, jump in, etc). So when he got fussy we just stopped and played. At his age, it's less about swimming and more about being comfortable in the pool, so we'll work this summer at the local pool. Anyhow, it was a lot of fun and they were pretty good, although I was disappointed that the teaching was "have him kick" and they didn't really tell you how to get him to do that. Anyhow, there's probably a Y by you that you could try. Your child should be at a really good age for it! Good luck!

M.

Have you checked w/ Wentzville Parks Dept? They have a pool at Prospect Park.
Also check for your nearest YMCA
Best of Luck

Since summer is coming your local pools in Wentzville likely have swimming lessons also -- check with your city's parks department

Not in Wentzville, but in O'Fallon, the Renauld Spirit Center does both group and private lessons. Here is their web site:
http://www.renaudspiritcenter.com/

Even closer in (where we have taken our children) is the St. Peters RecPlex which also does both group and private lessons. Here is their web site: http://www.stpetersmo.net/default.asp?SectionID=24

Personally I prefer the private lessons if you can afford them as you get one on one attention the entire time instead of being in a group where your child may get the attention for 5 to 10 minutes of a 45 minute class. But if you have the time to spend, the group lessons are fine and you get several lessons for the one price.

At age 3 at most places the parent no longer needs to be in the water -- just the teacher and the kids.

Also, when your daughter gets a little older -- next summer or the summer after, you may want to sign her up for the Wentzville swim team. The swim team is really the best way for your child to learn to swim -- they get a lot of practice, attention and have fun by winning ribbons (everyone wins ribbons no matter what place you come in). Your child does not need to know how to swim that well to join the swim team -- they teach them. Both of my children swim for Lake St. Louis and we do swim against the Wentzville team. My daughter started swim team at the age of 4 years, 4 months and loves it. She had one group lesson session and several private lessons (1 per week) for about 8 months before swim team started, but she by no means could swim a lap or anything before she started.

Good luck and have fun -- that is what is most important at your daughter's age.

I'm taking my daughter (almost 3) to the Renaud Spirit Center in O'Fallon & she loves it!! It's an indoor, heated pool and at her age I'm in the water with her. We've met some very nice people in her class & she can't wait until Saturday to see her new friends. I highly recommend it.

Have fun,
L.
