Looking for OB/GYN - Kansas City,MO

I just found out that I'm pregnant, and I have been searching the web for an OB in the Kansas City Metro area. Two requirements - my hubby wants me to only see a female doctor since I have had a previous bad experience with a male doctor and I don't have health insurance thru work, so I have MO Medicaid for this pregnancy. I live on the south side of KC but am willing to drive further to see a good doctor. Also, these dr offices that have multiple drs in them, are you required to see all the drs in the office, or can you limit yourself to just one dr? (I had a previous c-section and am currently planning to go that route again.) Does anyone have any recommendations for me?

What can I do next?

I also second Crystal Newby. I loved her as well. I am up North now and I am going to Northland OBGYN. I don't know if they accept your ins. or not.

As for seeing the doctors in a practice. Usually you will have to see them all and get who's on call. But since you are having a Section (I am as well) you will get to pick out of the doctors you like. I also prefer female doctors to males. But I really liked a male doctor that I saw a couple of visits ago.
Good luck in finding a practice!

I love Dr. Brenda Lofton(Jo. Co. Womens Clinic) and Crystal Newby (Kansas City Womens Clinic). Both are great Dr.s. I went to Lofton with my first pregancy. My insurance didn't cover pregnancies, so we paid out of pocket(not medicaid), and it's not really that much. They have special fees for people who are paying cash and it covers everything throughout the pregnancy. I switched to Newby for my second baby, because I did get ins that covers pregnancies and she was on the list of covered doctors and Lofton wasn't. Both doctors are awesome and if I had to pick between the two of them, I'd have to draw straws!!

I go to Amy Carter at Matile, Merrymen and Moore (they have 2 locations, on in the plaza, I'm not sure of the other). I'm having a c-section and she said I don't have to see anyone else, and even with non-planned vaginal they try to deliver their own babies on nights and some weekends. I will meet each of them, since you never know. If you go to a single person and they get sick or are out of town and you go into labor, you may have a man or women you've never meet. Chances are low, but it's always a possibility, and I would rather have meet them before. At my last group practice my doctor started my induction and then his shift ended and I got a new doctor. So I loved that she will almost guarantee that she will deliver me, but I just can't worry that if I go into preterm labor and she's not here, I want to know that person. Also, remember, you really want a women, but if you go to a private practice and she's out of town or unavailable, you get whomever they have cover them or in the worst case who is available at the hospital, which may or may not be a women. Good luck and congrats.

I went to Women's Health Service in the St. Joseph Medical Center (I-435 and State Line). I originally saw Dr. Neiwrzel but with the 2nd and 3rd child I made my appointments with Dr. Sam (she's the nurse practitioner). The same doc delivered all 3 of my boys but I spent more time with Sam. Since having my children the doc has retired and Becky Graham took over the practice. I have seen her for yearly exams and a suspicious lump. I am very happy with her as well. They listen to their patients instead of herding them through the office to allow for more patients and more money. Their office number is ###-###-#### if you would like to make an appointment.

I am a mother/baby nurse at SJMC. You are correct, when you go to a large group you never know who will end up delivering you. You do have one advantage in that you are planning a scheduled c/s. Of course having a c/s means that you will need to be delivered by a doc and not a midwife - bummer! Your biggest limitation is the MO Medicaid. I am going to tell you to try Dr. Becky Graham. Her office is at SJMC. Contmeporary Women's Care may also be an option but I am not sure they take MO Medicaid. Hope this helps. You can always call the L&D unit of where you want to deliver and ask for suggestions from the L&D nurses. They are a great source! :-) Best of luck!
