Looking for Info @ Dry Creek Elementary School

I was wondering if there are any moms out there with kids currently enrolled at Dry Creek Elementary who would mind sharing their opinion of the school? I have heard some not so positive things about the school and I'm hesitant to enroll my daughter there this fall for kindergarten. We recently moved to this area of Roseville from the Catheryn Gates Elementary area which is one of the top schools so I never had any concerns about her going to public school. Now I am a bit concerned to say the least. We have been attending a co-op preschool for the last two years and are on wait lists for a couple of charter schools but the lists are very long. Any info either way about Dry Creek would be most appreciated!! Thanks.

What can I do next?

I am not a mom of a student that goes to Dry Creek. We live in Antelope and last year they divided up our neighborhood. A lot of my sons friends were going to Dry Creek. After meeting with the principal I would have sent my son there if I could have. We would have had to apply for a transfer every year, not knowing if there would be space. There are some great teachers that have transferred to teach at Dry Creek. Dry Creek is a great school district as well. I believe that Dry Creek school gets judged by its looks and age, more than its academics. We have three kids going to school and they love it. Hope this helps.

Lucky for you I work in the Dry Creek School District. The district itself is a great place to work. As for the school, it is one of the oldest school's, but they have done wonders with it. The staff and principal are great there and they offer most everything the other school's have. I agree with the other response...you must be active in your child's education no matter what school they go to. And just remember...high test scores don't mean a happy school or child.

On the otherhand, the principal, Megan, from Catherine Gates is fantastic. She was my vice principal in the Dry Creek District for two years before she became principal at Gates. Speak with her...she would be a good one to talk to.

Good luck, but remember parents who aren't happy at a school say unhappy things...you need to judge for yourself...I know that as a teacher and a parent.

Here is my advice about schools in general. The more involved you are at the school, with your daughter's work, working in the classroom - the better off she will be. Kindergarten is a great start and very important but there is no state testing. As long as you are involved and working with her at home, she will be fine.

While you are there, you can get a vibe about the school. Are the teachers complaining, is the principal visible (walking around, knows the kids names, etc), how big is the PTA? Even low performing schools can be great if there is a culture of community and trying to improve.

After the first year - then decide if the school is right for your daughter, you and your family. Make the change as needed.

Visit schools, take a tours, visit several different classes, shadow a teacher at the school. If they have a good program - they won't mind showing it off. As there are problems at every school - the grass is not always greener on a high STAR performing campus.

Good Luck. I know with my first one - it was very difficult. Luckily we ended up at a great school with great teachers, a great principal, and a great PTA.
