What can I do next?

You can make a big deal or a small one....................Gymboree is a great option because they do everything for you and do all clean-up but it's kids only with their parents and you can have a few extra adults but you are limited..................

You can do it outside ......get a bunch of outdoor toys and balls and the kids will have a blast.........they sell outdoor lego-type GIANT blocks that keeps kids of all ages occupied for hours.............as far as food goes that's up to you....you can go Pizza to gourmet

Remember the 1st birthday party is really for you the parents more than them..........................

Also, FYI if you order your cake at Publix they give you a small personal cake for the baby for free for them to "MASH UP"

I went to a really good one year old party that was held in a country club setting in Boca...don't remember exactly where, but the entertainment was great...the room was full of age-appropriate toys for the babies to play with, and then a visit from Old McDonalds Farm petting zoo which will go anywhere...they came to our home for my son's second BD. It was a blast and the animals are really gentle.

My own kids didn't have much for their first...they were too young to really know what was going on. At that age, it's more for the parents and relatives. As they get older, you can do some really fun stuff like character parties, bounce houses and other backyard equpiment (we've had inflatable obstacle courses and water slides) The Fun Bus is good for preschoolers, of course chuck e cheese, gymnastics parties (also good for the very young...even the one year olds can do that; it's alot of movement and mommie and me type activity)....we have done just about everything! (I've got 2 teens now) I recall Cats gymnastics in Boca as particularly geared to that age.

What i'm saying is, there are many fun years ahead of you!! So there's really no pressure to go all out for this one.(unless you have another reason...more about that later...) I remember getting really down after my firstborn's first birthday because my expectations were too high. (As they also were for family holidays). She was cranky and didn't understand why all the people were there creating a break in the routine! Basically you want some cute pictures and for the adults involved to socialize, with their little ones, and have fun! But a one year old can only take so much stimulation. I've also heard the recommendation of one hour per age of child, something like that....keep it short.

If you have money to spare, I know people who have hired a party planner...I guess it depends on the size of the event you are planning; I might do that if I had a lot of family coming in from out of town and they expected something big, or a lot of business associates, or something along those lines. Otherwise I would save for the next few years, when they get to preschool and you have to invite the whole class!!

We celebrated my son's first birthday at Gymboree Play and Music and had a blast! Everyone had a great time. For about $250 you get a full Gymboree session, tables, etc. no clean up and a memorable time with your friends and family. Having the party at Gymboree really made it all about the babies, not just parents eating and having cocktails while half watching their kids.
I highly recommend it for your son's first birthday!

Hi K.,
I have three kids. For the first one I had a party in the park. I put out a blanket with toys and had kid music playing. As I had other children the first party got a little bit smaller. I am writing because my mom lives in the Boca area. She took us to this awsome park called sugar sand park. It seems like a great place for a first birthday. They had a merry-go-round for the little ones. You could give each child a token for a ride. They also had this huge playground for the older children and a science museam. You would not have to hire any entertainment. You probably already know about this park. I am sure the party will be great even if you do a little party with just family at home! That is what I did for my third one. Best of luck with whatever you decide.

I have found that 1st birthdays are more for the adults (friends and family) not so much the child. I had my 1st daughter's at our clubhouse and had some mats and toys for little ones to play with. I also had an inflatable pool with balls - that was a big hit
