Looking for Advice / Opinions from Moms of Little Ones That Get Sick Often!

I 100% agree with Gladys. My son was very sick all the time, and it's easy to blame daycares, etc., but you still have to deal with it. I highly recommend tubes. I'm surprised your pedi hasn't already suggested them. Definitely look into them - go to an ENT and talk about it.

Yes, get him off the meds! No kid with "allergies" needs meds like that. You said he was diagnosed with allergies - was he really? Or did your Pedi just say hey - he's got allergies. Because allergy testing can be intense. What, exactly, is he allergic to? Dustmites? Ragweed? Cats? What? Allergy testing will give you these specifics - then to control the allergies, you need to control the environment.

My son was sick for a year. No kidding! And we had been told allergies, daycare, the season, blah blah blah for reasoning. We got the tubes, instant fix to no more ear infections. But he still kept getting cold-type sick. My pedi finally did real allergy testing, and his only allergy was to milk - which presents just like outdoor allergies - with the congestion, runny nose, etc. So maybe consider a food allergy may be causing it, too, and ask your pedi to do food allergy testing. Within 3 days of switching him to soy milk, he cleared up.

Even with all that, sometimes kids just go through this. It seems like forever and is so exhausting, but it is helping to build the immune system, so keep that in mind.

My son is now 19 months and was getting sick all the time,everytime I turned around. He was diagnosed w/acid reflux at 7 wks and was getting ear infections everytime I turned around being at daycare and upper respiratory infection then he got RSV at 7 months on his first christmas. He ended up having 7 ear infections in a 4 month period so at 13 months we put tubes in his ears and he has only been sick twice since June.

I know it's hard seeing your little guy being sick all the time but I try not to take him anywhere that there is a lot of people and sanitize everything on a regular basis and make sure I wash my hands frequently.

Hi J.. I just wanted to let you know that I can totally relate to you! Late last fall my then 1.5 year old son began getting CONTINUOUS sinus infections. It was so sad, difficult and awful for everyone involved, but most especially him! I hated seeing him sick. On top of it all, I began getting non-stop sinus infections myself. The Drs. would put us on antibiotics, then we'd get better for a short while, then get sick all over again once the antibiotics were out of our system. First of all, your MDO or any other program, IS NOT GOING TO MAKE YOUR CHILD SICK ALL THE TIME!! Girl, the baskets at Kroger or any grocery store can do that! Everytime you share any air space with any other person, there is a risk! Germs are EVERYWHERE!! My son has been going to MDO since he was 6 months old and rarely if ever has he ever gotten sick from there!! First of all, get him off of all of those antibiotics!! Your Pedi should not continue to prescribe antibiotics all the time!! Antibiotics are good within themselves, but giving constantly, they are terrible!! Kids build up an immunity to them and then when you really need them to work, they won't!! First of all my kid also had allergies and constant ear infections and after 9 months of this (2004), I finally told my Pedi, we need tubes in his ears. Got that done (+ adenoids taken out) an his ear infections completed were eradicated. His sinus infections also cleared up a ton!! He still has some allergies and when the weather keeps changing, it affects him still, but if you son is still urinating, having normal BM's, eating good, sleeping well, then he really isn't sick. He may be feeling run down a bit, (like we all do), but he isn't truly "sick". If he runs a temp, that is when you need to worry. A fever is a signal of an infection within his body and usually that is what my son would do when he got an ear infection. Obviously, it could indicate other ailments as well.

Don't be so quick to medicate even though your physican tells you too, I am sorry, but they put Matthew on Zyrtex and Nasonex too and we only use it on a need to basis. If he starts having a runny nose, then we use it. We researched Nasonex for kids and we do NOT use it. It has some adverse effects, so we just go with the Aerokids or the Zyrtex, but only on a need to basis. Constantly medicating your son will only compound the problem, some things his little body needs to fight off on his own. This is the way they build their immune systems up and it is better for them to be sick now (while they are little) to when they get into pre-K or Kindergarten.

I hear you, but trust your Mom instints too. Doctors are NOT GOD and they DON'T KNOW everything!!

Research any diagnosis or ask question all the time. Your are your son's only health advocate, it is up to you to know!!

I do not have a sick kid all of the time, but wanted to add that my daughter has been in daycare for 4 months and she has not been sick once. You may want to consider taking him to a specialist for the allergies, to see if that is really the issue or what they might recommend.
