Hi mommies. we have a good humidifier now, but the cleaning process is SO complex it keeps me from using it as much as we should. My daughter really needs it, so I would love some recommendations. We live in a dry climate, and the winters are so h*** o* our sinuses - lots of dry sinuses and infections these past 2 winters. Any ideas would be appreciated. We all have allergies, so anything hypoallergenic is even better. thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I ended up going with the whole-house humidifier. We installed it yesterday. We bought a Honeywell at Home Depot for under $200. I am pretty excited about it, it's very low maintenance and keeps the air more humid throughout the whole house instead of only a room at a time :) thanks mommies!

We had originally purchased a regular humidifier when we moved into our current house, but than realized we didn't like it sitting in the room and having to remember to fill the water. We decided to get the humidifer that hooks up directly to the furnace (Whole House Humdifier), so when the furnace is running, it is also putting humidity into the air. We had this at our old house, but the company installed it with the air conditioning system. At our current house my husband purchased it at Menards and installed it himself. I love it and you never have to worry about filling the water at it connects to a water line. You can do a search online for " Whole House Humdifiers ".

We bought the Winnie the Pooh humidifier from Walgreens when our baby was born because she had congestion issues. I would suggest it for a small room and keep the door closed so it can really get the room comfortable. It's easy to clean. The only problem is you need to refill it a couple times a day if used a lot and if your hands are full it's a pain.

I second what the other poster said--go whole house. We've had a series of small room humidifiers and they are all literally impossible to clean and they've all molded and mildewed. Yuck. We don't even have serious allergies, but the damp air they spew smells gross. I also dry all my laundry during the winter--it can get the humidity up 10-15%.

Yup...I agree...go for the whole house humidifier. I live in a cold climate so we just hooked ours up to our heating system. My husband is fairly handy and was able to do it himself and the kit he bought at Menards/Home Depot was also inexpensive (I don't recall how much it was exactly). You'll be amazed not only at how better your sinuses are, but also I swear my hair and skin feel softer, even our carpet is softer! Good Luck!

Looks like everyone agrees that the whole house humidifier is the way to go...I would also have to agree with that. My husband isn't real handy so we had someone come and install ours, it only cost us around $300 which when you think about it, isn't all that much considering by the time you would buy a humidifier and the filters you may need to get through the winter you would spend just about that much or more. When my son had croup (age 1) the dr. did suggest I keep a cool mist humidifier in his room as well..double the moisture so I got one at Wal-Mart (home away from home :) )that doesn't require a filter. In the winter I still run that in his room as well.

My son is now 3..tomorrow!! I just love, love, LOVE him! I have a wonderful husband who takes great care of us so I can stay home with my son. I'm truely blessed.
