So we don;t let our LO use the Ipad except in extreme situations when he needs to be entertained like in the car on a long road trip.........but he is very attracted to it. We will be flying to Europe in a couple of months (he will be 22 mos at the time) and I want to keep him busy during the long 9 hour flight. Do you have any age appropriate app recommendations - so far we only use flashcards and listen to nursery rhymes on the ipad.......

I just got a iphone and had these loaded and used them at the Dr office when we were waiting for over an hour and I didn't want to let her run around and get dr office germs:

We like all the toca boca apps, but you will have to help him a little.
My daughter likes "Monkey Preschool Lunchbox". It has rotating games that include an 8-card memory game, a 4-piece puzzle, a pick the shape game, a pick the letter game, a which is different game, and a counting game. They're all quick and very simple for her to use on her own, except for the puzzle (which requires drag-n-pull skills -- that this game helped her to totally master). And in between every 3-4 games, they get to "pick a sticker". For 99-cents, it's a winner!
We don't let our kids really use it much either, like almost never, so we only have 2 apps I think! But the one my son likes is a shape one, I think it's just called shapes. It has the kid pick out the shape from the mix of shapes and then they get to collect "stickers" on their sticker page. It's pretty cute and is pretty basic.
try kidsdoodle. my 24 month old nephew loves it. it is like drawing with light and their finger:)
We flew our 2 year old to italy without any electronics but with lots of books to read to him, sticker play (think sticker books, scenes to create, etc), latch boards, lacing cards, crocodile dentist, lift the flap things, portable chalkboard/dry erase board that also stored crayons, paper and coloring books, felt boards, magnet scenes and his favorite stuffed animals. I'm happy to report no international incidents! At least, not on the flights... :)
ETA:
We weren't this lucky, but many of our friends that travel internationally report their kiddos fall asleep, esp on the night flight out, and they as parents get to sleep, too! They also watch the tvs on the flights. My son is scared of televisions and movies so our biggest challenge was keeping his head down for 10 hour so he wouldn't see the screens all over the plane.
