Lasik Reccomendations

I was just wondering if anyone has had experience with Lasik. I know it will probably be a year or so before I can save enough money to get it done, but I would really like to. I'm curious as to what the average cost is, and if anyone has any recommendations as to a doctor, or practice that they were very happy with. I've been in glasses since the 2nd grade, got contacts in the 7th, and am just sick of not being able to see without one or the other. I've talked to my regular eye doctor, and he said that my horrible vision wouldn't be a factor, and since my perscription has been stable for about 4 years now, he thinks I would be a good candidate, but they don't do any consults or anything for lasik, so he couldn't give me any more information. Thanks in advance!

Forgot to add, I am still nursing my little girl, so I know that I need to wait until we are done with that before I could have any surgery, just trying to prepare myself so when the time comes I know what I need to do (and how much $$ I need to have)

L.,

I was so afraid that it took me until 1/2007 to go have it done. I even went back last month for an enhancement. I went to the Lasik Vision Institute. They are AWESOME! I did a payment plan with them and it was only $140 a month for a year. My vision was 20/400 and I had astigmatisums (spelling?)in both eyes and thin corneas and had it done.
Go in and have a consultation it is free.
Call them ###-###-####.
Tell them M. O'Cana recommmended them to you. =)
It is great to wear sunglasses!!
Have a great day,
M.

Unfortunately, I am not a candidate, but I was very thankful to Dr. Stuart Lewis for telling me so. He is off of Colorado and Kentucky. He ended up doing my husbands, who also needed a different procedure than lasik due to his eye shape. He and his office staff are very nice, understanding and patient. Even though I couldn't have lasik they are keeping me in mind for other surgeries that I may qualify for. However, Dr. Lewis has said more than once he will not do any surgery that he would not perform on his own daughter. Good Luck!

I went to the TLC for my surgery and it was $3800 for both eyes. I was in the same boat as you with having glasses since I was in 3rd grade and having a 7.5 in both eyes for contacts. They do free consultations to make sure you are eligible. I have a $100 off coupon if you want it!

My husband had laser correction surgery in January. He had PRK, but loved the surgeons he used. Anyone at the Colorado Laser Surgeon Practice in the Cherry Creek Mall area is great. They win all kinds of awards, and did a great job for my husband. It was $1800 an eye for PRK, but lasik might be different. Before the surgery, you go in for a consult, they measure the cornea and determine if you are a better candidate for PRK or lasik.

My DH had his Lasik done at the Lasik Institute off of Alameda & Colorado. He had a wonderful experience there and I will be getting mine done as soon as I'm done nursing and my hormones go back to "normal" Just a heads up though he said the first night was very painful, but eased up a lot after 12 hours.

The 20/20 Institute is great. I had my procedure done over a year ago. There is no "pain" involved. The weirdest thing is the contraption used to keep yours eyes open. They give you a valium about 20 minutes before the procedure and they give you one to take that night. I opted for the 2 yr gaurantee and had to have a enhancement one one eye about 9 months later. My suggestion is pay the extra money for the lifetime guarantee especially if you plan on having any more children. The evaluation to see if you are a good canidate is free. They have financing available. I cant remember the exact amount but I think it was around $3200. If you have a flex spending account Lasik is a covered expense. It was the best decision I ever made. Good luck!

I had Lasik in 1999 with Dr. Karen Heuer. She is wonderful. She uses the ICON center to perform the surgery (at least she did then), but it was so nice to have an actual doctor instead of just a center. She was expensive back then, but totally worth every penny. I have been 20/10 for nearly nine years with her. Her office takes such good care of their patients. Even if she's a little more expensive, I think it's worth it for the extra special care you get.

My husband & I both went to Icon back in 2004. We've been very happy. It cost around $1000 per eye (I think). I varies depending on which laser they use based on your prescription. We went to the office at I-25 & Colorado Blvd. but there's an office now up north, maybe in Frederick or Dacono. Hope this helps!

I don't know about Lasik Procedures because it won't let me get rid of my glasses because I have old age eye problems. but the only doctor that comes to mind is Karen? Heuer. She specializes in Lasik. She was trained at the University of Colorado Hospital. I knew her a little because she did a rotation where I worked. She was recommended on KOSI radio by one of the people who had Lasik done by her. I have a good ophthalmologist and I don't know if he does them or not. Ithink he said he did them. There are other doctors I am sure do a good job, too.

Oh, I am a mother, but my daughter is all grown up and have children of her own.

My husband had the same vision issues as you and was considered legally blind without his glasses. Since we now have a 3 yr old, he was always having to worry about them being broken or lost.

Last year he had Lasik at the Lasik Vision Institute on 760 S. Colorado Blvd (in the building next to Chili's in the Home Depot parking lot). We had the option of paying $1,000 per eye, but increased it to $1,200 per eye in order to get the lifetime guarentee. The doctor there is the eye trama surgeon at Denver Health (formerly Denver General Hospital).

One week after surgery he went in for a check up and was told he now has 20/20 vision. He is loving not having to worry about loosing/breaking them while goofing around with our son, skiing, swimming, etc.

Hope this helps.

PS - they also have a payment plan with no interest for one year and if you have a payflex/cafeteria plan at work, they will reimburse for it.

I had Lasik surg. about 5 years ago. I am much older than you, but as long as you are done having babies, (your eyes change apparently during pregnancy, so most Dr.s think it is waste of time and money b/4 your-'re done:0) You should definetly consider it. One of the problems I had when my kids were young was loading them into the car and having my glasses fall off in the summer. If for no other reason than solving that problem, it was WAY worth it to me. My surg. costs 2400.00, which is a little high I think, but Dr. Frankle in Cherry Creek is really good. I could see the next day completley and even right afterwards though it was a bit fuzzy then. I have not once regreted it or thought it was a bad decision. Good luck if you decide to go for it. S.

Hi L.,
After wearing glasses since childhood and contacts since teen years, my husband and I both had lasik done in Sept 06 and we love it. We have been married 7.5 years and also have 3 children 6, almost 5, and almost 3. It has been so freeing to not have to worry about glasses/contacts as we enjoy life with our kids!! Cost was a factor for us, as well. We went to ICON Lasik (Colorado Blvd and Mexico Ave). At that time they were offering a special if you came in with a family member or friend. We were very pleased with the whole process there - the doctors, procedures, follow ups, etc. Even without the "deal", they are still more reasonable than other places. We would highly recommend them. You can look on their website for more info. I am not sure how old you are, but my husband and I were both 40 when we did this, so we did the Monovision - which is correcting one eye for distance and one for close up. It took a week or two (or more) for my brain to adjust to the differences in my eyes, now I don't even notice. With monovision, we should be free from glasses longer!!! Hope this helps. C. M.

Hi L.,

I have worked in two Lasik surgical suites, both as a technician and a counselor. Although they were in San Diego, the surgeons were corneal specialists, which I highly recommend as far as what type of doctor to choose. (Because the surgery is on your cornea) I have seen so many procedures and must say that there were only a few cases where they had to do repeat surgeries.

The cost is somewhere around 3-4,000 and should cover your pre and post op (might be dont thru your Optometrist) and be sure to ask about any "touch ups" that might need to be done. Most patients used their FSA and care credit, but it might be cheaper just to put in on a low apr card.

I think it is a life changing procedure for so many and I would definitely have it done if I needed it.

I wish you all the best and take your time choosing your doctor. Tracy
