Kid Swallowed Toy Piece - a Little TMI Question

Since it is a smooth metal ball (and not 2 little magnets that can stick together with intestine between them causing a hole eventually) I would just let him be. Unless you are worried that the size would be difficult or painful to poop out, I think you are done. I have heard of pennies and marbles getting swallowed and those just come out. The penny with the flatness might cause more problems if it got stuck in a bend of the intestine, but a little ball should just roll right through his insides and fall in the toilet. Maybe you will be lucky and hear a little "clink" when it falls in the ceramic bowl, but I would not worry about examining his poop.

I would call the doctor. Depending on what the ball was made of and its size, they may want to check and make sure they know where it is in his intestinal tract (ie by Xray). It's better to call and double check, imo.

My daughter was about 1 when I went to change her diaper and to my shock found a pair of dice in amongst the poop! I have no idea how or where she got them, and had no time the days before when she acted as if she was choking or whatever. I can't say how lucky I felt that she didn't have trouble with it. We laugh about it now that she's nearly 30, but somethings do just come thru on their own and who knows what we miss if it's burried in the messy diaper. Not many of us inspect every little morsel..eww.. I know Teenmom is right about magnets so you would want to be in the ER if he had taken a couple or those magnet balls and swallowed them. They can be deadly. Not knowing the size, I'd guess it's about the size of a marble if he swallowed it so easy, and it will just come out. His poop is bigger than that and you may never see it unless you smoosh every piece looking. what fun.. PS.. if its a crucial piece to the toy,, go for it! (o:

Check with the doctor, but it's my guess you don't have a lot to worry about from how small it sounds. Plus, the fact that it's round means it will probably go right through the digestive tract without any problems.

My doofus nephew swallowed a pop top from a soda can. He was about 8 and had pulled the top completely off then put it down in the can and forgot about it being in there.
Anyway, my sister took him to urgent care and they told her to check to make sure it came out. It wasn't a huge concern, but because of the odd shape and the fact that there was no way of knowing if there was a sharp edge, they wanted to make sure it came out. It took a few days, but it did.
She had him go in a big laundry soap bucket. It makes me sick just to think about it.

I swallowed a nickel when I was younger. My mom told me she had to check my poop and told me that she needed me to let her know when I had to poop and not to flush when I went. She would check it after and I think in a few days it was out and I was fine. Just explain to him that you need to check his poop to make sure that he's passed the ball. If you explain it without freaking him out and instruct him to let you know when he poops, I'm sure he'll let you do your checks. :) Take care!

I would call the dr.to be sure. I would say you do want to check... you don't want it to get stuck in his system (how big is it?).... He'll be fine, but I'd call the Dr. to get his/her opinion.

I would try putting a collander in between the toilet seat that way you can be sure it comes out when he goes otherwise your pediatrician may want to have an x-ray done. As far as him taking care of things himself, maybe you can explain to him that sometimes there are things that you need to check out. Good luck.

I wouldn't be too worried about it if the ball is pinky-sized or smaller (You said in your last post that it is from one of those building things, right?)... but for your own peace of mind you could check it out. I probably would, just to be sure. lol.

Maybe you could put a round pan in the toilet...something that would fit fairly well in the bowl, far enough down that splashing won't be a huge issue. You might even cut a slit in it so the liquids can drain straight out. I think one of the tin throwaway ones would work best... The adults will know to pull it out before going, but tell your son to just go in it. That way you won't have to fish his poo out of the toilet too! You can check his poo in it, then dump it, rinse, and try again until you find the little ball. Yummy.

If the ball could possibly be lead or contain any lead, you'd want immediate medical attention. Some cheap toys made outside the U.S. do contain lead and sometimes in dangerous amounts (kids' jewelry is particularly bad; the Consumer Product Safety Commission recalls a lot of kids' jewelry because of lead content).

If the ball could be a magnet and if he might without mentioning it have swallowed more than one, that could be fatal (the magnets attract inside the body and can cause tears in the bowels etc.) and would require immediate medical attention.

Until he's older I'd confiscate all small parts he might swallow. One experiment with "I'll put this in my mouth" usually isn't enough for kids who explore things orally.

If you can't check his poop I'd ask the doc for an x-ray or whatever is appropriate that the doctor wants to do. Some doctors will say no, don't sweat it unless he has symptoms of something wrong, while others will order a test right away -- depends on your doc and how much you do or don't want to push for any testing.
