Hi Moms, My 8 year old is interested in Karate Classes, he has been for quite a while and I'm just getting around to looking into places and comparing prices. I've only talked with 2 places so far but I'm just astounded by the fact that one place wants a 6 month commitment or contract, the other place wanted 12 months. THE KID IS 8i!!! Do you have ideas of places I can look into that won't require a contact? We live in NW Olathe.

Thank you, M.

What can I do next?

Definately go with Kenukan! They are about the only legitamate place around this area. They are the real deal and don't produce a bunch of "pajama dancers". They will teach your children tecniques they can actually use and make your child work for his belts. Most martial arts "acadamies" just want your check book and that is why they are constantly testing your child, since each new test costs you money.

Bob & Travis Boggs (father & son) own it and are wonderful people! They are downtown Olathe near the courthouse. Their dojo is on Kansas ave & I believe it is, Cedar street. No paper tigers is their motto.

Why don't you start with looking through the local parks and rec. Olathe used to have a top notch rec program.

Good Luck,

check into your local community center. Some have kids programs such as karate, tae kwon do, and dance or cheerleading classes that are very reasonable and not as competitive and is usually a good start to see how interested they are.

My 2 boys attend the After School Judo Academy in Southern Olathe, I know its Judo instead of Karate, but they are very nice people and do not have a contract. My boys love it! During the summer they have an alternative to daycare which kids can attend all day and then they also have the regular evening sessions. Their website is http://asjajudoks.com/ if you would like to take a look. If you would like more information you can email me.
