Just Stopped Breastfeeding and I Haven't Gotten My Period.

Hi Mommies! My daughter is almost a year old and she has weaned herself at 10 months. I continued pumping and pretty much lost my milk supply over the last few months. I officially stopped breastfeeding this past Saturday. I have not had a period yet. I just wanted to ask if other women have experienced this. Most women I talk to do have their periods back. Is it normal not to have gotten it yet?

Thank you!

Hi M.,
I breastfed my son until he was 17 1/2 months old. I didn't get a period for another couple of months. Most mommies I know got their periods much sooner. I just remember thinking, wow! I haven't had a period in more than two years! Everyone has different timing....

My sister and I are 2 1/2 years apart and my mother never got a period between us! Everybody is different, you may want to keep a pregnancy test on hand just in case, but it is not unusual to go for quite some time without. I have been breast feeding for 7 months (still am) and I just got my first period this month. Others I know breastfed exclusively got their period right away... you never know. I wouldn't worry about it. Good luck!

Hi M.!

Don't worry! It is totally normal... it took a few months after I finished breastfeeding for me to get my period back. I breast fed for about 7 months each time and it was just over a year after each birth before I got it. I enjoyed every minute of NOT having my period so don't fret just enjoy!

I'm currently breastfeeding my third baby. He is 16 months and no period yet - it's kind of nice really. With my other two, I nursed them both until 14-15 months with no period at all, then both times it came back within about a month of stopping and I was pregnant the next month both times! So don't worry - it doesn't affect your fertility or body's health.

I breastfed my son until he was about 11 1/2 months old and never got my period during that time. I started my period for the first time about 2 months after I stopped nursing. It'll come!

Give your body some time to adjust. Every woman's body is different and some get their periods back the instant they stop other don't. I was different with my babies. With my daughter I didn't have a period while breastfeeding. With my son I had a regular cycle while breastfeeding. So don't worry.

It took a couple weeks after I stopped nursing to get my period back, which we were so excited about because we wanted to get pregnant again. Hang in there, it will come soon enough. Enjoy the rest of your time off : )

You need to get a pregnancy test my friend :) When I started feeding my daughter solids and cut back on the breast I got my period. I also got pregnant while continuing to breast feed! Also, if the test comes out negative you should probably see your Dr. REMEMBER every person is different.

Hi M.,
I didn't get my period at all while I was breast feeding (including the times that I was weaning off). If I remember right I went 2 months after I stopped with my daughter and just less that hat with my son. I wouldn't be concerned yet. But if you are, you may want to call your OB and just confirm. It never hurts to get their re-assurance to take the worries off of you.

Hi M.,
I weaned from nursing when my daughter was about 13 months and it took me about 2 months give or take to get a period. I think you are very much in the normal zone. From what I read, it can take up to 6 months or so to get your period after nursing. I would check in with your doctor if it goes past the 6 month mark.

Hi M.. I don't think this is abnormal at all. I got what I'd call a mini-period shortly after I stopped breastfeeding at a year that lasted about a day and a half. It was another month or so before I got a "real" one. I wanted to add, though, that the day after I got that mini one, I was on the phone to my Gyn to get on a more effective birth control than the mini-pill. If you're concerned, you can always take a test.

Don't worry... Every woman is different. However, just to put you at ease, it took me 6 months after I stopped breastfeeding to get my period. I too was worried after a few months, but my dr. said they don't typically begin worrying unless it's been over a year since you stopped breastfeeding that you don't get your period... That's when they'll start going all kinds of hormone treatments.
And you're only 1 month out, so instead of worrying, just sit back, relax, and watch your baby girl become a toddler. :-)

Hi! I stopped pumping about 4 months (lack of supply...) and didn't get my 1st period until 2 months later. Just like our babies, I've experienced that our bodies are all different. I'd say enjoy! (unless you want to pro-create again). It's not so fun going back, slightly heavier, for a longer amount of time and even more in between spotting. But again, that was my experience and yours might be much more pleasant.

Luck to you!!!

For both my pregnancies, it's taken a couple months after I stopped breastfeeding for my period to start. I think that's within the range of normal.

It took me a month from the time I officially stopped Breastfeeding to get a period...don't worry and make sure you talk to your OBGYN about questions you have. He/She will be the best resource about things like this.

Hi M.,

I think every woman is different. I had my daughter and nursed her until she was 15 months, and I had gotten my period 2 times while nursing and got pregnant with my son. So, I had my son, he is now 18 months old, I am still nursing him at night to go to sleep only, and I have gotten my period since December. Your body needs time to get back to normal and all the hormones and such have been out of wack for so long, just give your body time, and be sure to use birth control, you can get pregnant even if you have no period.

Hope this helps!
M.

The only time that has happened to me was when I was pregnant and didn't know it. I was nursing a 7 month old at the time. Maybe you should take a pregnancy test just to make sure. If not, I would go see your doctor to rule anything else out. But most likely you're just fine. When I'm nursing, it always takes a long time to get my period back. Meanwhile, you might as well enjoy it!

Everybody's different. Some women get their periods back shortly after giving birth, even though they are breastfeeding. I didn't get mine back until my son was almost 2 (he was 22.5 months old), and they have been really irregular since (it has been 6 months). My cycles are very long, more than 60 days, but I know that it takes a while for them to become regular again. I wouldn't worry about it :)
