Wondering About My Period

My son is 9 months old and I don't have a regular period yet. I'm still breast feeding him a few times a day, and I know that can affect when your period returns. I did have my first period last month, but nothing this month. Is this normal? Does it matter that I had a c-section? I was extremely regular before I was pregnant--I never skipped a month at all. Thanks for your input!

What can I do next?

I have a 10 year old son and a 4 year old son. I nursed both boys until just after the age of two (following the surgeon general's instructions back in the late 1990s). In both cases my periods were regular as clockwork before pregnancy, but during nursing they were all over the place. In fact, I had only four to six periods during the entire two years of nursing. I had asked my doctor about it and she said this was perfectly normal because since I was breast feeding. Granted, keep in mind that just because you don't have a period, you can still get pregnant again so use protection! :o) I was on the mini-pill. It doesn't give you the same amount of birth control, but it does work.

E., it sounds pretty normal to me. I breastfed my son for over a year and my period did not come back on a regular basis until I finished breastfeeding entirely.

The same thing happened to me over the last two months. I am also breastfeeding my daughter who will be 9 months in a week. I had started eating a lot of soy products and attributed my period's return to that, because soy products can increase your estrogen levels enough (so I learned). So I stopped eating the soy products and it has not come back the next month. I actually got a pregnancy test thinking I might be pregnant, but it was negative (phew!). I still nurse my daughter 5-7 times a day and don't expect to have normal periods until she's weaned off. Every woman is different, and I think what your experiencing is well within the range of normal!

That is totally normal!!! Isn't it great to not have to worry about a period for 18 months? (Pregnancy + postpartum) :) It doesn't have anything to do with your c-section; it's all about your hormones right now and the breastfeeding. I have 3 children whom I breastfed, and my period returned at around 9 months with two of them, and at 7 months with the other. But it is normal for women to go even longer, until their children are 2 years old if they are nursing them.

I don't have an answer so much as sympathy! I also had a C-section almost 6 months ago, am breastfeeding my son, I was like clockwork before, and I have not had even a hint of a period since he was born. Last month I had all of the "warnings" I used to get, (headache, a little cramping) but no period. I asked my OB and he said this is perfectly normal and that some women end up going so long that they get pregnant and start all over again without ever getting their period back. It seems strange, but for the time being I'll just enjoy the "perk" of not having to deal with it!
