Is It a Cold?

How do I know if my LO has a cold? Her nose seems a little stuffed up and I think I hear rattling in her chest? No other symptoms except sneezing which is normal at this age (3 weeks). She has been nursing well except the last night or 2. she will latch on, suck for a second then spit it out and cry, not sure if its because her nose is stuffed up or no milk due to her marathon night nursing?

What can I do next?

Could it be sinusitis? My youngest had a pretty bad case of that when she was a baby and it lasted a long time. She still gets it once in a while and when she does we get her antibiotics from the doctor for it.

Take her to the DOCTOR today! It may be pneumonia, which is going around, or whooping cough, which is also going around. This isn't something to play around with, you should really get her into the doctor's office, and if you can't get in there, to the E.R.

My son had similar symptoms at that age. Take her in right away. They gave me a nebulizer to help clean out his lungs.
The ears could very well be a ear infection. Good Luck!!

I know it is common for babies to just be stuffed up at this age, but the rattling in the chest and not wanting to nurse signals something else is going on. I would have her seen by a doctor, to rule out a chest cold and/or an ear infection.

Newborns have difficulty getting their bodily fluids in order. You have plenty of milk-even if she is constantly attached at night. I would try suctioning her out really good before nursing. Since you can't put vick's rub on her, I would put it on yourself really light. I used to do that with my newborns. That way they are keeping their passageways clear. You know what it's like to drink milk when your throats a little sticky and your nose is plugged. That is why she is spitting it out. If she starts to run a fever-take her in to the dr. Otherwise just run a humidifier to also help keep her sinuses clear. Good luck!

I would take her to a chiropractor TODAY!!!!! Find a good one that takes special infant and child training.

If it is her ears or throat bothering her an adjustment will more than likely clear it up within a couple hours.

Also, tell them your worry and they will listen to her chest. And have them look in her ears too. They can check a baby out as well (if not better) than a regular doctor "check-up" would and will spend more time with her.

If you are still worried then I would take her to the regular doc.

If you think she has a rattle in her chest you need to take her to the doctor. I would also take her if she is not wanting to eat she may have a ear infection or something else. I hope she is feeling better soon.

My 2mo. old has cough, rattle in chest, and stuffed up big time. They thought it was pnuemonia and all sorts of stuff and put her on antibiotics and a nebulizer.

I'd take her in to a pediatrician right away. Don't use urgent care they're morons when it comes to tiny babies. If you have to go to the ER but not urgent care.

Hi B.,
I would get her in to the ped ASAP. My son had RSV at 2 months. For a few days i thought it was just a cold...my hubby had one too. Then one morning i thought he was sounding a little rattly too so i called my mom who worked in a pediatric urgent care so she could listen to him...she started screaming into the phone for me and said to call the ped right away. They swabbed my sons nose (it's not fun but it's the only way to get a definate diagnosis). We had a nebulizer delivered to the house an hour after i got back home from home health. We were able to keep him out of the hospital but had a few sleepless nights and a drive to ER in a snowstorm. We had to go back to the ped every other day for about a week then it tapered off. I of course got the same thing. I can't remember the name of it for when you are an adult or a child over the age of two. Remember to keep drinking water so you can keep your fluids up and keep nursing...it the best thing. I also put vicks on my chest and on top of my breast for when he was nursing. Good luck at the doctors.
