Introducing Solids Resulting in 'Diaper Blowout'

I've read that your baby can go either way after starting solids..either constipation or blow out. I was wondering, how long does it take for their bowel movements adjust? My little one just turned 6 months is very interested in my food. I want to start her, but we are taking a long flight in 6 days, and would hate for her to be uncomfortable on her first plane ride. Do you think it's best that we wait until we are back from grandmas house (we will be there 10 days)?

So What Happened?

When I retured from Grandma's house, we started her on organic rice. She loooves it and has had no tummy troubles at all.

You could wait until you get back or you could start it at Grandmas house. You will be there 10 days that should be enough time for the baby to adjust and just think how nice it will be for Grandma to be there for one of the babys "firsts." That way you won't have to worry about it on the plane going and you will know what to expect on the way back home since it will be 10 days in already.
P.S. My kids did not have a problem either way when they started food. Good luck!

Our little guy went the "blow out" route. Lots of fun...

Anyway, I would suggest waiting until you get back to really introduce solids. You do NOT want to change an explosive diaper on the plane nor do you want to deal with a constipated baby when he will likely be "off schedule" anyway.

My son was in FL with us in April and experienced a bout of true constipation. It was terrible for him- couldn't sleep and cried for hours. My mom literally slept with him on the wood floor b/c the pressure felt good on his tummy and it was the only way he could relax. It was a VERY LONG four hours until he was able to have a bowel movement.

Generally, not a good idea to do anything "new or different" when you are going to be away from your home and your doctor!

Have a good trip!

WAIT! You don't have to introduce solids until 1 year anyway. a 15 day wait is not going to be bad.

Good luck!

personally i would wait till you get back. incase she does not respond well to the food transition, she will be relaxed in her own home and on her normal routine. there is a lot of change when you travel that is upsetting to thier little tummys. Mommy maybe there, but there will be a lot of strange faces and arms that will want to hold her. Have a nice trip.

you can start out slowly... like cheerios to eat.. or noodles... but mix these with baby food too. don't give up on the baby food.. baby food has so many vitamins... and so many types to choose from.. give some baby food and some finger food.. good luck.

My kids had no diaper problems as a result of solids, but I would not introduce any new foods while away at grandmas, just in case of reaction/food allergy, you'd want to have access to your own pediatrician
Good luck

My pediatrician started us at 4 months with solids. I was also going away just after that (in a car). I chose to start solids when we got back. We then flew to FL just after her 6 month visit.. again. I chose to wait until we got back for any changes in her diet.
I would wait until you get back to change her diet. Good luck!

just started my 6 month old on solids. sure its an adjustment but don't think you need to wait. the poop for my son is different and needs more changing but nothing major. he was constipated for a day after the rice cereal so we are using oatmeal instead but he never complained anyway. go for it- its no big deal.
