Infant Having Constant Burp Attacks

My 7 week old is suffering from a normal thing like having constant burps from feedings. every time i nurse her i burp every few minutes to reduce her from having air bubbles, but she seems to be always fussy from them, falls asleep and few min later wakes up, crying most of the day and when i pick her up again, she burps. i feel that its none stop routine all day long - trying to burp my baby! i know they all have those this early on, but i don't remember my first one constantly having this issue. maybe its the way she's sucking, swallowing air or is it something else? i feel silly asking, but i can burp her 24/7. and i do it in different position (seating her down, straight up against my body, on her tummy... )

What can I do next?

What kind of bottle are you using? I had the same problem and I switched to the playtex vent air bottles. This way when she is drinking she isn't getting so much air. This really helped my daughter with that problem. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Hi,
Congrats, I have a six week old daughter. You should keep her upright for 15 minutes after each feeding and keep her slightly upright while feeding. Make sure she is latched correctly, not getting air, and you can use the Mylicon drops every feeding (peditricians advice) if nessasary to help with gas pain.

I switched my daughter to formula after a month of breastfeeding and she was having constipation and gas pain from the transition. The medicine definitly helped with her fussiness.

Have you tried speaking to her doctor? It sounds like an allergy or reflux, both of which could cause gas and fussiness.

My daughter was having bad gas/burps as well. My pediatrician said not to OVER burp her... just do it once in the middle and at the end (she was bottle fed).... and not to do it for more than 2 minutes. If the baby doesn't burp by then, then why still force a burp? I suggest keeping her upright after feedings, and to get a sleep wedge for when she is sleeping/napping that'll keep her inclined.

One more observation, check her latch, if she's latching properly she shouldn't be getting air in.

I think it sounds like reflux. my daughter had that too. she was only comfortable lying on her stomach. Once she started her reflux medicine she was much better. There also may be some thing in your diet that is bothering her. Like milk products. When Vanessa was that young I had to give up eating milk products and certain other foods. but now 11months, she can have milk products. I would talk to your ped.

Hi! When your baby is nursing, make sure she has good "fishie lips" when she latches on. Run your fingers between your breast and under her lips to make sure, pulling gently on her lips until she has a good seal. The burping is pretty normal, but if she is falling asleep and waking up shortly after and uncomfortable she may have reflux. Try elevating her crib/bassinet by putting a pillow or some other item under the end where her head is to help. Is she continues to be uncomfortable ask your doctor to try a six week run of baby antacid. It literally was day and night for my second one!!

maybe she's fussy from being hungry still. try not to burp her so often and instead allow her to eat 15 minutes or so straight. then you can burp her...and you can do it in the different positions....then maybe try the other breast.

Sounds like reflux to me too. Have you tried the mylicon drops? Of - there's GripeWater too which is all natural. Maybe that will help. I know a friend used it for her dgtr w/ colic and another who used it for gas and both seemed to be really happy with the result.

Also - when you lay her down - try to prop her up just a touch so that her head is slightly elevated and it may relieve her little belly. Poor little thing!

I know you probably hate to "bother" your ped with this, but those are all classic signs of reflux and they should recognize it easily. I would not be giving Mylicon on a regular basis to an infant. You want to fix the problem, not cover up the symptoms.
